Techno is right about Interesting Times. Jingo is the one with the war between Ankh Morpork and Klatch, and the island. |

I particularly like the ones that had the wizards trying to do each other in as a subplot. Or do they do that in all of them?
Nice list. The Fifth Elephant was the last one I read (when it came out), and I'd assumed I'd got way behind. Looks like I've not got too much to catch up on. -

No Interesting Times is the one with Cohen trying to become Emperor.
Yep, The Last Continent was the Australian one, as Lutz said. -

Edit: And Good Omens is well worth a read. -

Registered 17 years agoI read 'The Colour Of Magic' some years ago. Since then I've been baffled as to how he's made a career out of writing.
There's a fine line between 'funny' and 'crap', and Mr Pratchett is so far over the wrong side of that line he couldn't see it with the Hubble telescope.
Go buy some Douglas Adams. Even the serious stuff like 'Last Chance To See...' is funnier than the Discworld stuff. -

I like a fine steak, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy eating sausages as well -

Were you trying to be Pratchett or Adams there? -

Registered 14 years agoAnother vote for any book involving "The Guards"
Watch (Vimes) > Rincewind > Death
and is this bit not
22. The Last Continent (1998)
The Last Hero
Reading them in order does help a very small bit e.g. Knowing who's who e.g. how Death gets a granddaughter etc... -

I often go into threads about things I don't like and then post about how I don't like them. I'm an Internet Arsehole. -

Pratchett himself has admitted that the first two were incoherent and rubbish. I agree with him.

Registered 16 years agoI don't think him being in love with the world is a bad thing, nor do I require laughs from every book.
Also, I'd like to see you write a series of 30 books in the same universe with the same characters that produces as many 'laugh out loud' moments towards the end as it did at the start! -

Registered 15 years agoNight Watch is an awesome book if you like the goings on in Ankh, I think its probably one of my favourite Discworld books. -
I loved Rogers the Bulls. I don't think I've ever laughed as hard at any of his jokes as I did with that bit. -
Yeah, Night Watch is prolly my fave too. -

Don't expect anyone to claim them classic status any time soon, but for my limited fantasy experience, they're extremely readable examples of a much maligned* genre.
*Aforementioned experience suggests this isn't exactly unwarranted. -

The Witches are good, but they have a week start. Equal Rites is shite, Wyrd sisters isn't great.
Lords and Ladies, and Maskerade are awesome though.

And the Death novels are great too. Always loved Soul Music for some reason.

Genji: I'd say Men at Arms is probably my fave of the Watch books too. 3rd best book in the series (After Mort and Reaper Man) -
I think his best books might actually be his childrens books. The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents in particular is brilliant. A childrens story that doesn't talk down to children and manages to be dark and intelligent while still perfectly easy to understand and enjoy, for kids and adults alike.
