But the mechanics are only half the story in a stealth game and unfortunately Thief’s inconsistent artificial intelligence is as frustrating and illogical as usual for the genre. As you might imagine that means guards with the usual goldfish memory and a refusal to call for reinforcements. That might have been forgiven if it was all part of the carefully balanced gameplay, but for most of the time the artificial intelligence just seems broken, with terrible path-finding and, like some early era Dalek, a total inability to ascend stairs.
The end result is you feel you’re not so much dodging highly-trained guards as staying out of the way of a bunch of drunken lager louts, who are just as likely to pile into themselves as make any real effort to pursue you. -

Registered 8 years agoI'm reading more and more reviews of this in dumb shock at what they've done to fuck up a series so highly regarded. Think the coils of rope that you can attach rope arrows to has done it for me. It was barely plausible in tomb raider and now here the exact same fucking things are in Thief?
If Dark Souls 2 wasn't out in two weeks I would fill my XBox up with vomit now and sail it down the river on a flaming barge. -

Registered 15 years agoI've never played a Thief game before, so fuck it, I'm still gonna play it and see what's what. It's disappointing, because I loved the Deus Ex reboot, but I do still love sneaking and nicking shit, so it can't be ALL bad. -

I would add you really should play the previous games. I started with DS on xbox, which I still have and play from time to time to this day, it is backwards on the 360, although I still have a Xbox set up, so play on that. I then went an investigated the previous games, which are excellent.
Back to Thief 4 I'm still looking forward to playing it. -

2/5 on Giant Bomb.
Pretty wide gaps between reviews, and some of the stuff I've read in different reviews is contradictory on a factual level. Bit weird, -

Mine hasn't despatched yet, even though Simply Games are showing it as in stock.
Not that it matters much, haven't got time to play much at the moment anyway. -
I do wonder if perhaps the game is reviewing inconsistently because some people who are reviewing it love the first two, or three, games and find this game too big a disappointment while there are others who never played Theif or don't cherish it so are approaching their reviews with less of a predetermined bias. -

I find it is something similar to film reviews in that you find a reviewer you generally concur with and then follow what they say about films. I've yet to find that many games reviewers who manage the same thing but I do tend to find there are certain EG posters that share similar interests in games. Not that I'm buying this anyway but I'm interested to hear if there are some positive voices amongst the bile this game is generating. -
@Mr_Sleep Sounds like a reasonable theory, but John Walker's "Wot I Think" is the most positive take I've read on the game, and he's a glowing fanboy of the originals. .gif)

With games, it's 40/50 quid and hours upon hours of 'investment'. -

I've seen everything from a 3 to an 8.5, can't remember a gap that wide, it's bizarre.
