HBO had a short tribute to Gandolfini before showing last night's episode. It was very sad!

We should all watch The Sopranos in remembrance of JG.

I envy her seeing it for the first time!

I'm still in shock about his death, tbh.

    Me too.

Even from the first episode, seeing him clutch at his chest when he blacks out was very morbid.

It's very interesting seeing such universal praise for him. Strange in this day and age of celebrity death jokes that for the most part, people are sad to lose him rather than taking a dig about say, his weight (I don't think he was that bloody big anyway).

Heath Ledger, Michael Jackson etc weren't so lucky.

Maybe because he died naturally rather than in the ways Ledger and Jackson did? Look at someone like John Candy, who everyone seems to remember fondly.

And obviously Jackson had the whole other thing hanging over his head as well, so he was doomed to be ridiculed.

The Sopranos had a huge following, and Tony seemed to be universally loved as a character. The praise surprises me as well, but more because he didn't really do much outside of the show.

I read that ultimate cunt Bill O'Reilly from Fox News USA was having a pop at him for turning a criminal into a good guy

Personally I found Sopranos to be a bit underwhelming on the whole, but the ending was genius.

I though it did mean death? It had been set up in an earlier episode where Tony and (I don't remember who the other one was) go fishing and they talk about death and someone says it probably just cuts to black all of a sudden...

I thought it was more ambiguous than that, but will now have to re-watch all episodes just to pick up on that hint!

I can't remember the scene that clearly but I do seem to remember that almost everyone in the restaurant in the final scene was someone that he had pissed off in one way or another.

Yeah, there's a blatant set up in the fishing scene, there's heavy referencing that scene in Godfather where a bloke gets shot in a restaurant, and there's a pattern to the changes in point of view in the scene where the point where it turns black is where you would expect to have Tony's point of view.

    He's dead.

I like an open ending so I personally read it both ways. I think it was the perfect ending to be and it took some balls to finish the show in that way.
    Agreed!

The guy that killed him is wearing the same jacket as the guy that killed Sil.

We are not supposed to know who sanctioned it because he doesn't know, he's a mob boss, he probably had people lining up to whack him.

Who's to say it had to have been sanctioned anyway? It could have been a revenge thing or just someone trying to make their bones.

He is dead. There is a great analysis of that scene I read (which I am sure was linked in this thread somewhere) and I cannot fault it. The way the shots switch the shot that should come when we get blackness is Tony looking at Meadow coming in the door.

The conversation on the fishing boat is with Bobby. Interestingly Bobby most certainly does not get the lights out and know nothing about it death. I would actually say that scene is so blatant signposting for the end it actually comes across as pretty unsubtle as it's a flash back to the weekend away with Bobby and Janice that has no real reason to be included.

As to who sanctioned it maybe people were not as happy about Phil Leotardo's death as they made out. Maybe a clean sweep was thought to be the best solution. Who knows. It's not that important ultimately as there are plenty of reasons someone might have wanted Tony dead.

Bobby was Junior's helper wasn't he?

(Really need to watch this again)

@AcidSnake That is what he started as but towards the end he ended up becoming more important in Tony's crew.

He get's hit in the toy shop buying a new toy train for reference.

@anthonypappa It's the logical conclusion of the scene. It ends with a black screen because it's Tony's story and once he is dead well there is no more telling Tony's story.
