Why did they remove graphical touches like that? Isn't the Wii more powerful than the gamecube?

Yes, it's basically an Gamecube with the CPU and GPU overlocked, has over double the RAM and IIRC some small GPU improvements.
It's easily more powerful, no idea what went on there.

Yeah, hence why fate has intervened. It's not to be, because I'm not paying £18 for it. In a box in a loft somewhere is a Gamecube and the original game.

It was mainly nostalgia - I was horrifically bad at the game, never finished any of 'em actually. Even in my yoof I was shite at games that involved quick(ish) reactions.
It's easier with the wiimote controls.

So is there somewhere I can see the differences between cube original (can't believe it is almost 15 years old) and this new version?

    Supposedly....

"The particle effects were removed because they introduced graphical glitches related to the new angles the WiiMote controls allowed for the Arm Cannon; angles not originally programmed into the games. It could have been fixed by adding those new angles, but Retro took the easy way out."

That sounds logical actually if the effects were produced under the assumption of always being viewed from a specific angle, shame they didn't put the extra in but not a huge loss. Bit like how some games break if you force them to run at 60fps as everything was made under the assumption it would only ever run at 30.

I heard they had to remove it due to the arm cannon moving around rather than being stationary. No idea why the rippling water would be taken out though.

On the positive side, the textures and shadows were improved and they added bloom lighting.

No idea why they removed the water phsics though.

I understand that it's because those effects where 2d overlays dropped on top of the main graphics and that the change to widescreen and/or the moving arm made them so they don't fit properly. Some bollocks like that anyway. I don;t believe it's a performance thing.

I don't think "can't be arsed" is a phrase at all appropriate when talking about a compilation of rereleases including two games which had a not insignificant amount of work poured into a new control scheme.

If they truly couldn't be arsed, then the effects would still be there in all their glitchy glory.

Maybe they ran out of time? Who knows. Either way, we were lucky to get them as a Trilogy. I think they initially planned on releasing the first two games seperately, under the 'New Play Control' collection (like they did with the two Pikmin games and Mario Tennis).

Speaking of which, if you can track down the Pikmin games, they play amazingly well with pointer controls. Amazingly well!

Prices for the trilogy (used or new) haven't moved an inch on amazon since this was released on Wii U. Goes to show that, at least for this game, an infinite supply of digital copies does not much affect demand for the physical versions.

Wow. They dropped the ball with some misguided design in Prime 2 didn't they?

It's still a solid game, but backtracking feels more annoying than fun, the Dark World feels like it complicates the exploration a tad too much, and the guy who implemented the health draining (which on numerous occasions has led to me having to down tools in a light bubble for up to ten minutes for my health to recharge enough to proceed) needs to stay away from game development.

I didn't want Prime 1 to end, but now I can't wait to get this over with and move on to Corruption.
  • Deleted user 22 February 2015 14:22:38
Corruption is less annoying that 2, but I know some folk weren't massive fans of it. I prefer it to 2 for the very reasons you've just mentioned.

It's a shame because I feel at times the world design and atmosphere is far superior to Prime 1. It really nails the 'alien planet' vibe.

Had a craving for some classic gaming so I stuck this on last night, the low resolution takes a bit of getting used but the gameplay and level design is still superb.

I've not actually played Prime since the original GC release and after an hour or so I was completely hooked again, it's just so so good. Really looking forward to getting home so I can play a 15 year old game despite having a stack of new games waiting to played.

Out of interest how long is the game? I seem to remember it taking me ages but I think I got lost a few times running around looking for the artifacts I was missing.

    @Switch024

I can't actually remember. I remember playing it for quite some time though, and I don't think I finished it.

Hm, you're making me want to fire this up now :)

@quadfather I'm going through a phase at the minute, other than Zelda I really can't be arsed with anything.

I watched a few Digital Foundry Retro videos over the weekend and I've just got the urge to play a load of old stuff.

I have a vague memory of it having a slightly tedious filler section just before the end that kind of killed it for me, a bit like Wind Waker.

I've still only played Prime 1, despite owning all three and thinking the first is one of the best games ever made. Must rectify that soon.

    @Switch024

I'm always doing that. Especially when I've just done a game I've really enjoyed (Same for me - Zelda). I've just finished prey and then went back and picked up where I left on Sniper Elite 4 but I'm after something a bit more comfortable. I was thinking of retropie the other day, but I might go through some old Wii stuff.

That's the bit I remember taking me ages, running around collecting the last few artifacts.

I only played the first one too, I'd like to play the others before 4 comes out. Be interesting to experience them, I know they divide opinion.

Yeah, I always heard mixed things about Echoes. I did start it, but I only got about half an hour into it for some reason.

@quadfather Zelda is one of those games that's so good it almost ruins anything else that is remotely similar.
