Using Wave only makes sense if some of the people you are in communication with regularly also use it, so that's your friends, family, ... people you know.
Not people you post on a internet forum with.

Maybe people here don't have any real friends.. =) or maybe only a few people they'll work together with on a project - giving one away means another person can invte more people obviously.. etc. etc.

You only get 5 initially and I don't htink everyone even gets those.
I'll be impressed if people can't find 5 chums they normally exchange emails with.

What would be the benefit of that? I mean I understand the benefit of IM, and being able to see what a person is tying as they do it, but VOIP? I don't get it.
What's the benefit of including IM into email?

Until there's a convergence of internet communication tech, all these baby steps are pointless and this might be the most useless to date.

And you don't have to "get it", everyone's net use is different. I use things like skype a lot because I'm away from loved ones and my clients more than I like to be and phoning between the UK, US and Japan is expensive. Not everyone is chained to a 10 mile radius.

I want convergence, not yet another piece of useless shit.

Well apparently a 3rd party has already been developing voice comms for Wave.

    http://www.ribbit.com/wave/

That's the thing about it. They've made it Open Source, and its basically a platform to build whatever form of communication you want. I personally, because I work on a lot of International research projects would love it, because they currently involve a lot of e-mail tennis and collaborative writing of documents. The real-time editing would probably reduce the amount of time I have to spend in conference calls by half.

My understanding of wave is that it's more of a facebook meets IM. But each "wave" is like a new Facebook account. I'm really looking forward to start using it for work.

I don't think it's a "staying in touch with friends and loved ones" service but rather a tool for projec†s where people are not all in the same room.

But I don't have a beta so I might be wrong.

Oh, you snooty pillock! I understand now, you only have sight around the you-niverse! I also use Skype lots calling out all around the World, it doesn't take much effort to click on it though, does it? And, as you've just set up another thread on this subject, maybe convergence for google won't be so far away.

Yaaaay! My invite arrived this morning. Unfortunately, because I'm a second generation invitee I don't have any nominations of my own to give out.

Anyone else from EG floating around on Wave?

    My Wave ID is Captain.Binky

Wave would be potentially revolutionary for email from both an end-user experience perspective and controlling rising SPAM levels. It's about as far from a 'baby step' as you can get when compared to SMTP and is very, very worthwhile.

I made a Eurogamer wave on GoogleWave (search for "with:public eurogamer" to find it). Currently there seems to be just me on there from here :o(

I was offered an invite too, but said they might as well give it to someone who understands what the fuss is about.

I'm currently using Wave at work for on-line collaboration / document discussion / etc. and I have to say, it's completely brilliant.

You know it's email with IM thrown in. The more interesting thing about it is that it's possible for anyone to develop plugins (which for some reason they call 'extensions') for it.

At the moment there are only a few extensions ranging from slightly rubbish: a shared sudoku board. To apparently brilliant: one allows you to use something called 'ribbit', which is a thing that can hook into VOIP protocols including Skype - 'apparently' because I've no idea how well it works.

Given that it can be extended then this could be the convergence that Dirtbox is hoping for.

So it's a centralised way of managing users and letting them get together around these extensions - to play a game of chess, or have a business video conference or collaboratively edit a piece of music or maybe one day play a videogame.... who knows?

As for invites, it took about a week for mine to show up in my inbox after a friend who got in during the first round sent one to me. New users don't get invites yet.. see here...
