Yeah, we made a difference :p. First of all, yes: Trilogy contains 3 great games and will satisfy you for hours on end. Secondly, you can always rent Other M if you are unsure about it. It's short anyway, so you can probably finish it before returning it.

cheers, i hope the Wii controls work well on the trilogy.

I have played the gamecube versions for years. Then Corruption came out and I loved the controls so much I couldn't wait for Nintendo to remake the old ones. Then I heard about Trilogy and I couldn't contain my joy. I suggest setting sensitivity to max, that way you can move very freely.

I found Other M to be an interesting new takeoff of the Metroid series. I never saw it as or expected it to be the big new Metroid game as all the other grumps on here obviously did though.

As Metroids go, it felt more like Fusion than Super, with the linearity and strong story focus. And despite it being far from the best of the series, I still found it a fun and authentic Metroid experience.

I liked all the dichotomies in it; the way it implemented both 2D and 3D, how it balanced classic NES-like gameplay with motion based targeting, and how it combined a polished retro experience (despite the freedom/powerup restrictions) with a modern story-setup.

As has been said by others though, the story was a bit cringeworthy at parts, and I had really hoped the game would open up more as it went on. The gameplay also got a bit stale towards the end, where it felt like it kind of hit a roof, but that seemed like more a limitation of the control method itself though. Overall, they did really good in creating such a deep gameplay experience with such simple controls.

It's a simpler Metroid experience than usual, and a bit more of a love it or hate it thing because of the wierd new mesh of ideas, but I was still completely enveloped in it the two evenings I spent completing it.

It's wierd though, how the last two games in the chronology are the ones that both feel and play the most like training exercises. Also, the thumbs turning thing symbolised how Samus went from being perceived as a weak woman squadmate to the strong lone warrior bounty hunter we know her as. Surely, this should have been a prequel?

Yeah, thats a good point. Its hardly Samus coming of age.

That's a point many have made: it would have worked as a prequel to the original. But that's just the characterization.

The item unlocking would still be absurd, even if it was a prequel or a non-Metroid game. Having the Varia Suit, the Gravity Suit, the Grapple Beam and any other non offensive upgrade but not using them makes absolutely no sense.

As for the linearity and reduced exploration, there are people who like to be told where to go and don't want to think about it for themselves, and I can respect that. The Prime Trilogy catered to those people elegantly, with a hint system. But for most Metroid fans (including me), getting lost is the whole point. The Primes catered to us as well, by being able to turn off the hint system. This way one game make us all happy. This time, doors close behind you and the only way is forward until the game decides you can go back and explore. Can we turn that off so everybody can be happy? Unfortunately not.

Well my thoughts on Metroid:other M are that I quite like the game,it's better (IMO of course) having a story, though I agree they could of done with having a better actress for Samus (Jennifer Hale would of been good),Quite a good game from Tecmo Koei though i am wondering how much of the game did Team Ninja actually make cause it does say co developed so they didn't make it all.

Team Ninja is a subsidiary of Tecmo. I don't think the rest of Tecmo Koei had any hand in this.

Which of the other games have you played? I've noticed people with little to no experience with Metroid tend to like it, since they don't compare the usual progression in the games and the usual minimalistic characterization with what Other M has to offer.

I agree Jennifer Hale would have been a great choice for Samus the badass bounty hunter (she voiced her grunts in the Primes), but I doubt she would have worked for whiny twilight Samus. Ms. Hale's voice comes over as powerful and non-nonsense.

I thought the thumbs down scene was her remembering serving in the Galactic Federation, so it would have been a memory from before all the Metroid games. We just get to see it in this one, lucky us.

I think it was just setting up the relationship with General (then commander) Adam shows that she was already different to the rest of the Galactic Federation Soliders under his command back then, and possibly setting up why she left the Galactic Federation Army (though I've not finished the game so i don't know if that was fully explained or not)

I probably shouldn't promote my own stuff, but it took me four hours to write and there seem to be a few analyses of the story bouncing around here, so I'll add my own.

Guilt, Gender & Surrogacy in Metroid: Other M

    Enjoy!

Well done, xandaca. I agree. Although coming off as awkward at points, the game had a legitimate story and theme.

She was a woman in the rest of the series, if that's what you mean. It's not really a spoiler anymore ;).

That got some chuckles out of me :). Nice find H.
I'm bidding on a used copy from eBay tomorrow, so I should practice my brickdodging with my brick earring.

Edit as to not double post: According to VGChartz, Other M sales are consistently lower than Corruption sales. Even in Japan, where it sold relatively well in the first week, the second week shows lower sales than Corruption's second week. I made myself an excell sheet to compare since VGChartz seems to have taken away the option to do so on the website (please send me a link if I'm wrong). I'm comparing sales with Corruption as it came out only for the Wii and was released in all three regions, so it should be similar in sales.

Piracy probably has a big part to do with that. Most people who own a Wii have it soft modded, so unless its a more casual-appealing game, it's going to be downloaded more than it is bought.

I haven't played this since the release weekend (just got to the start of the third sector) and the severe cunting everyone has been giving the game in this and other threads really isn't helping me to play on.

Is it really as bad as everyone is making out or is this all typical angry nerd hyperbole?

Does the "Other M" sub-title make any sense after having played the game?

I get pretty angry nerd rage wherever Metroid is concerned, to be honest. But also, trying to be a bit objective, it's still disappointing. It's an interesting approach to a game (with no attachment to the Metroid series, say), but it gets repetitive very quickly and has pacing issues. Also the story and characters will make you want to knife your own child.

@JSW: Sort of, if you want it to. It doesn't really make a difference. That bit of the game is best left unmentioned really.

Ugh, I feel like I need a shower.

Fair enough, unfortunately it's taken a back seat since I got Blur and Halo Reach, and with Dead Rising 2 and a new Borderlands DLC in the next few days it's going to have to wait even longer.

However being a big Metroid fan I can't help but read the worst into all these complaints about turning Samus into a sulky emo kid following orders. Of the little I played I was already irritated by being told when I could use different powers rather than discovering them. The worst of this was dying repeatedly on one of the lava exposed corridors, only to be told once I finally got past this bit that I could use my Varia Suit. Yeah, thanks for that!

So Other M is like a quirky solo side project while we still await the next proper release from Samus And The Metroids?

It doesn't even make sense, it's a non-offensive feature of the suit FFS. Why would you possibly wanna switch it off even?

Well, I certainly hope that's the case.
