Can't tell you about the PC store, I don't have windows.

When you download to the PS3 you can look up the restrictions on a game by pressing triangle and selecting information. On the PS1 games I have, the restrtictions go something like "everyone can play this game as long as the owner (meaning the user who bought the game) is registered on the PS3, once you delete the owner you won't be able to play the game". Meaning I use my US account to buy the game, but I play it using my European account. Also, don't forget PS1/PS2 memory cards are common to all users on the PS3, unlike PS3 saves, which are user-specific.

I downloaded RE directly to the PSP from the store and it still didn't break my European Silent Hill.

Basically here in PAL land our televisions (used to) refresh at 50hz, whereas NTSC refresh at 60hz. Also PAL has 625 lines of resolution whereas NTSC has 525.

To get a game that was made for an NTSC system (FFVII was made in Japan, it's NTSC there too)

You have the refresh rates right, but the number of lines wrong. In general, the thing with PAL/NTSC is that NTSC has more fps, but less lines and PAL has less fps, but more lines. The key thing is that the BANDWIDTH is the same. Also, the Japanese NTSC is actually slightly different to the US one (black level is the same as in PAL).

Most significantly, PS1 games rarely if ever ran at full-TV resolutions.

I have an actual PS1 PAL FFVII and trust me, it runs fine. The 3D is not fully smooth, of course, but that's standard PS1 for you.
Fairly sure those numbers are right. The resolution isn't significant at all because the proportion of the screen that is black stays the same, which is what we were discussing.

For me the annoying thing is the speed difference anyway, I also have a PS1 PAL FFVII and to say it runs fine is ridiculous.

Watch this to see a comparable PAL conversion (except FFVII's sound was sped up to compensate):

I'm not denying that the NTSC version is faster. I'm just saying that if you have no NTSC version to compare, the PAL version is fine to play - you are not at a disadvantage versus the game because of the difference in framerate. So yes, it is "fine".

In any case, back in the day I'd played FFVII on PC, and that version is much nicer than either of the PS1 ones.

    Awesome, and no region coding?
Someone said you could use mastercard to purchase from the US store. Failing that, I'll order a card off the bay.

I'm using a Visa. Will vary by bank and country, I'm sure.

IAC, it doesn't hurt to try. The worst that could happen is that your card will be rejected, I suppose?

OIC, well then I agree, it's still a great game and totally still worth the punt if it's the only version you can get your hands on.

I also have the original PAL version and was oblivious up until now that the NTSC version was superior -_-. Loved it to bits all the same, but I might have to try the better one now :p

Good times: FFVII battle music. (awesome solo at 1.50ish)

Wasn't it impossible to complete the Excalibur II challenge in PAL Final Fantasy IX because of reduced game speed?

Will have to try my card with this when I get home. I'm probably the only person on here that is yet to play the original (well, I played it for the 1st hour years ans years and years ago)!

Anyone advise re. the state of the graphics on a big LCD TV?

They look fine on my 40" set. Well... they look like PS1 graphics so don't expect anything to shiny, but it looked fine to me. Spent 4 hours playing it this afternoon from my sickbed and it was good times all the way - the game is so good that you kind of ignore the graphics anyway after a while. :-)

Yes, the game is amazing. But I prefer PS1/PS2 games on a CRT telly, to be honest. Only reason I still keep around a 21incher. I still got lots of PS2 games to get through before I let it retire.

That, or the PSP. Its small screen lends itself very well to big PS1 pixels.

It's funny. I do consider myself a bit of a graphics whore, but for older stuff like this I find I can relax my standards.

Anyway, it's been 10 years since I last played this and it still stands up today.

Do they always release the PAL version on our market place then? that's put me well off ever getting any retro games off it, I suppose it's language support but it'd still be nice to have the option.

I'm not sure that is the case. A sony bod on the sony blog said a release date was TBA.

If it was tomorrow he would have said that surely..?

Slower and cheaper - and the speed I'm used to anyways. Or wait and have to mess around with ebay (which I hate). Hmmmmm.

I'd go the ebay route tonight, the missus has tied all the cards we hold in the house to it though and I've lost my debit card (been using the joint account).

So...I've never used the PlayStation store before. Do I have to register? Also, how much is the game likely to be?
  • Deleted user 3 June 2009 19:39:09
This would excite me more if I could control how 'zoomed in' it will appear on the PSP screen. I think the options are totally squished, totally zoomed and missing half the screen; or 4:3 with huge black borders on the sides.

The PAL version might even be preferable as the existing black borders might create a comprimise with the 'totally zoomed in' option. I want an option that's like 'Smart' on my widescreen Sony telly.

You do have to register, and normally about £4 for PS1 games.

I think Final Fantasy will be going for a premium, so don't expect to be less than £10.
