    Buuuuuuump

Yes I know the remake thread is active but I want to talk about the original (albeit playing it on PS4, wahey!)

Right up to the Temple of Ancients now, whoever decided to add in the "x3 speed" and "no encounters" whatsits is ann absolute genius. Smashed my way there in 12 hours whilst picking up pretty much everything and getting through some epic grinding in minutes. What a game!

Really hope they do the same for FFVIII and FFIX - played them all so many times and love replaying them, but it's great being able to experience them again at x3 the speed.

Wait up, 3x what now? Is that on the vita version too?

Yeah not on Vita version, just this PS4 re-release (and think the iOS version too actually)

I need to pick it up again, the idea of being able to speed through it is very appealing.

I've used the 3x speed quite a bit for getting through summon animations and long pieces of backtracking, but I won't be touching the other boosters with a barge pole.

Almost on to 'disc 3'. Playing through this game makes me realise how little Square Enix actually try with this series anymore.

Did everyone enjoy the mini games as much as I did?

I know a few of them were slightly clunky but just the sheer variety impressed me back when it was first released.

I don't think any other FF has had that.

I could sit and play that Submarine game for a good while. I'd happily have played a full game of that.

Tempted to go for the Platinum. Got Aeris' final limit break last night just before she karks it, get in!
  • Deleted user 16 December 2015 11:58:06
Tempted to do the unthinkable and play VII, VIII, IX concurrently (not so much X as the step up in graphics probably would make it hard to go back to the PS1 titles). Whenever I play one, I think "what would it be like to play one of the others". If that makes sense.

I remember really getting into the snowboarding back in the day. There were extra modes and unlockable Cid/Tifa iirc. Hoping they won't be cutting all that out of the remake...

Paled in comparison to Triple Triad, mind.

Fucking hell Triple Triad, my second playthrough of FFVIII I really went for it and managed to get every card. HOURS of my life, HOURS. Loved it too.

I've been thinking of replaying this over xmas once i have finished off Fallout 4. Not sure though, i want to , but i don't want a double dose of FF7 in quick succession, albeit the new one will play a lot differently and there is no obvious time frame for a release.

@JoelStinty I don't think we will see the new one next year to be honest.

Not seen too many comparisons of the PS4 version so I assume pretty much identical to the PC release. Not sure if it is worthwhile when I have the PSOne classic and a nice small Vita screen to hide the age deficiencies...

I started playing VII on my Vita last night. Looks and plays great! Also thanks to the custom control & screen zoom options.

I'd say the Vita's screen is the ideal size for these games, as the low-ish res backgrounds/3D models of the PSOne version aren't as noticeable as on the big screen and as such still look pretty good to me.

Agreed - IX on the Vita is still a thing of beauty, still looks stunning.
  • Deleted user 17 December 2015 15:08:41
Yep that also. I re-arranged the games so I have one row filled with FF VII to X - and the row above is MGS1, HD & Peace Walker:) Now to actually complete them all...

oh, btw, i eventually downloaded it. Up to infiltrating Shinra HQ. Got Red on my team now.

Impressed with the port, looks a bit dated, but my memory and that just kind of fills it all in.

Also the music man, so good. A couple of times i have just stopped and listened to the tracks play over.

The last time i played this was at uni, when i got to the submarine and stopped for some reason, but playing it now, it really is pretty linear, and what i remember going forward it pretty much is most of the way through the game.

Which leads me on to all this shit posting in the new FF7 story posts where people are going fuck Square Enix for making this non open world (even though there is no proof yet), and ...since when is linearity a bad thing? Since FF10 it been shit on and now is sort of used in a derogative manner with most games. But haven't all FF games been pretty linear? As for Chrono Trigger that is really linear ( need to get back to that, fallout 4 got in the way).
  • Deleted user 23 December 2015 10:56:08
FFVII is almost totally linear. The only stuff story content that is outside the narrative tunnel is Yuffie's side quest, and I guess Vincent's stuff, but that's quite small.

People saying it had an open world are overstating it. There was a map rendered in 3D. I like the map, but an open world it is not. The exploration on the map screen consisted of a few caves and I guess the Ancient Forest.

I'm basically okay with the remake being linear, as the original game was.

Part of what made FF7 special for a lot of people is how you could freely explore certain places in different orders, go back and complete things you might've missed, and generally the feeling that it was a coherent world you could explore to your hearts content. Sure, this comes into play more near the end than during the main story, but taking that out wouldn't be ideal and would strip out something that many people feel is key to what made it feel special to them.

Up until that last chapter I suppose it was more about giving the illusion of freedom rather than the real thing, but it did let you go off the beaten path enough that you rarely felt the game was forcing you down one path (which in many cases it wasn't). The Gold Saucer, Chocobo Racing and Raising, the hunt for the Weapons, getting all the best weapons and final limit breaks, returning to all the places you visited along the way to see how they're doing, the 2 optional characters, getting a full Enemy Skill materia and any items you might've missed are things that weren't necessarily part of the main story but really made the game one that has stuck with me.

As I say though, that'll be mostly for the last chapter, and certainly won't apply to everyone.

To be quite honest, while the feeling of the game opening up after Midgar was one of the biggest wow moments in my early gaming days, even back then I didn't really like it that much 1) due to random battles and 2) it looked rubbish compared to the prerendered backgrounds of the rest of the game.

Not sure what else they could've done back then, but it gave it a slightly inconsistent look.

guess you didn't get to the second act? it's definitely non-linear - that's directly related to the central conceit, even.

agreed about most FF games, though!
