Any suggestions from the EG collective?
I have a casual gaming friend who from time to time will pick up a random game in store based on the box art and romp through it.

We shared a house with a friend 9-10 years ago and spent many nights battling each other in Half life on custom maps that were small enough for a fun 1v1 game.

He rang up last night with a "new game" itch and wanted to know what he could get that would be good for us to play 1v1.

I recommended him Left 4 Dead, since we could always do that co-op with 2 randoms or 2 AI teammates.

Anything else that comes to mind? Most multiplayers shooters have gotten bigger, so 1v1 is less and less feasible/fun.

    Oh. Just remembered Quake live.
Is it possible to get into a 1v1 private game there?

Fight night isn't on PC is it? I did tell him to get himself a 360 and it'd be rather easy to get ourselves on a game together.

Dawn of war sounds like an option. I suck at RTS games but he used to play starcraft I think so he'd probably enjoy wiping me all over the map.

Football games can't be beat for 1v1 action. FIFA 09 then.

Any Unreal Tournament is good in 1 v 1 mode. UT 2004 had a brilliant 1 on 1 pack created especially for it by its community. UT3 has less, but if you search hard enough you'll find something (or just fill out the others with bots or onliners). Hell, have a versus mapping competition where you both have to create a small DM map by a certain date, and see which map is best and who is the best player in it :p

If you fancy revisiting Half-Life, get the Half-Life Decay mod. It's a port of the two player co-op that was bundled into the Playstation 2 version: An entirely new set of missions set at the same time as the original game (rather than the original Freeman campaign. Play that in SvenCo-op). For that matter, the Synergy mod enables coop in HL2, Ep1, Ep2 and even the brilliant episodic mod Minerva: Metastasis (if neither of you have HL2 or Ep1, ask around. Plenty of people got spare copies after Orange Box came out).

Introversion's Defcon would be an interesting game to 1 on 1 with, if you're up for a little strategy.

It's a shame that few people commit to cooperative modes on the PC anymore. After all, a 1 versus 1 is only going to be as fun as the skills of the two people are balanced. There's no fun in me challenging my housemates on PC FPS, (or Puyo Puyo!) because I wipe the floor with them.... and there's equally no fun in playing Guitar Hero or a Console FPS, because they return the favour :)
