Just Cause - must be able to pick it up for peanuts now - an will give you time to practice your skills in time for Just Cause 2 which is looking very good.

    Hmm.

    Tough one this actually.

    I'd say...

    L4D
    GTAIV
Mirror's Edge (if you don't already have a Triple)
    The Darkness (")

Gears is totally meh, and Halo 3 is a high res version of the others with a good online mode.

Duh. Fable 2 actually. That was really good.

Whatever you do don't miss Fable 2 and Braid.

See althought I enjoyed Fable, it isn't a must buy for me.
Depends on what kind of games you enjoy really but I'd recommend Gears of War (either 1/2).

Forza 2, or PGR are both fun racing games with lots of depth.

Call of Duty 4 has a good multiplayer lifespan.

To be honest I'd probably buy some of the earlier 360 releases for dirt cheap and play catch-up.

Its known as the "trey" now noob! :p

I'd recommend Mass Effect, The Orange Box, possibly Gears 2 for the campaign and perhaps Geometry Wars if old skool action is your thing.

I thought fable was pretty underwhelming also...

If you're a game developer making XBLA/PSN titles the first game you need to check out is Geometry Wars 2. Then you need to steal their leaderboard layout, showing your friends on the screen like that is a key design element that EVERY game with an online leaderboard should steal.

(It's also one of the best shooters and has an interesting implementation for achievements that actually extends the game)

I've got the original but from the looks of things the sequal improves it in pretty much every way. The orig was superb to be honest so a great suggestion.

Crackdown can be picked up sub £10 so I'd say thats a good purchase, to be honest you could make a superb game collection for about £40 these days. I'd even throw in a little Viva Pinata if you enjoy those kinds of games.

It's impossible to chose just 4 without omitting a load of other equally worthy games.

but I suppose, desert island scenario and I had to decide on just four....

    EDF
    COD 4 (for the multiplayer)
    Forza 2
    viva Pinata

    mrmrc84,

definately there are so many old games to be found on the cheap now. I am implementing a no-new-game buying rule until Forza 3 and Im gonna try and get through some of the older classics. Still havnt played Crackdown, Dead Rising, Kameo, Battlestations etc

    Fable 2
    Fallout 3
    GTA 4
    Portal *

    * Might as well be Orange Box but, for me, Portal is the stand-out. While I can appreciate HL2's quality, it doesn't really do it for me and wouldn't make it to the desert island.

Edit: Actually, in the desert island scenario, I would dither over Gears of War and Portal for fourth place until the last nanosecond and throw one in the suitcase at random.

    I highly recommend:

    1) GTA IV - As long as you don't mind rude language and jokes
    2) The Orange Box - Mostly for Team Fortress 2
    3) The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Great huge RPG (get GOTY)
    4) Call if Duty 4 or 5

    If you want something different

    1) Thrillville: Off the Rails - Sims meets Rollercoaster Tycoon meets High School Musical. Fun mini-games though and multiplayer!
    2) Bully - Play as a bully kid in true Rockstar style
    3) Kameo: Elementals of Power - very friendly action RPG (also a launch title)

    If you want a shooter

    1) Halo 3 - Duh!
    2) Gears of War 1 & 2
    3) Rainbow Six Vegas 2 - Very tactical
    4) Mercinaries 2: World in Flames - Total destruction and fun!

This is actually one of the best consoles this gen for JRPG's. So if your into that there are loads of games. Plus FFXIII coming.

This is also slow becoming the console of hack 'n slash games. We got:

    Conan
    Viking: Battle for Asgard
    Too Human
    Sacred 2

And there is some kind of really super good values that were the next big thing at the time of release but never did well in reviews. All these titles have demos on Live.

    1) Fracture - Very cool concept. You raise or lower terrain with your gun.
    2) Shadowrun - Crazy technology and magic mix. You can fly, teleport, x-ray to see enemies and loads of shooting
    3) Timeshift - Stop, go back in time. Another cool concept.
    4) The Club - Shooter with a strange premise
    5) Just Cause - Open world shooter, crazy stunts

If you like fighting games, loads of those!

    1) Dead or Alive 4
    2) Soul Calibur 4
    3) Street Fighter 4
    4) Virtua Fighter 5

    So there are some choices.

I've only recently bought a 360. Just started Fable 2 and it's interesting so far (I like the voice acting - remember, everything written here is just someone's opinion!).

Lost Odyssey was a huge amount of fun if you like the ol' JRPG (although towards the end I was immensely pissed off by the massive gaps between save points!).

I couldn't get on with DMC 4. And Resi 5 is still collecting dust.

Soul Calibur 4 is, in my opinion, a bit pants. Great tits but the fighting styles aren't involving enough for me. I prefer the Virtua Fighter, although I haven't tried DOA 4 yet.

I also really like the Lego games, of which Batman is the best, followed by Star Wars: The Complete Saga.

Just Cause is a lotta fun
    Crackdown
    Gears 1

All games that can be had for pence now. \o/

Step 1: figure out what kind of game appeal to you personally.
Step 2: Google it for best critical appraisal.
    Step 3: Buy some games

    ^ Heh. Or not.......

Okay, purchase time, purely for Mass Effect and the impending sequel, but also for ST:Legacy (I know, but all these STO vids are making me envious), and I'm looking at other oddities. Two Worlds has caught my eye, purely on a "just how bad (but good) is it ?", and I'm searching for Battlestations:pacific but can't remember if there was an improved sequel. Same with Kingdom of Fire, halp ! Ooo, and Tenchu Z.......

/realises there's lots of forgotten gems

Any other exclusive niche recommendations ? (not your Halols or Gears of Meh, I've played most of the 'big' names)

And finally, cheap Arcade or more expensive Elite ? I'm not going online with it, and would rather the cheap'n'cheerful option, but the HDD instalation is intriguing, if it's available for everything rather than a selection.

I would go for the Elite (super elite even better). Install works for pretty much everything bar a few. No spinning DVD drive means it's really quiet and load times are shrunk down.
