Oh, no I usually let it go down to about 80% then it starts to bug me so I charge it again. I'm tempted to buy a dock to keep it in like a "normal" phone. Is that a good idea? I think it'd look nice on my desk.

One day we're going to have batteries that don't need recharging, for devices like this. We'll be able to tell our grandkids about how we had to plug the phone in to the mains to give it power every day. Oh they'll laugh!

I was clearing out the spare room the other day and found a digital watch I used to wear when I was a kid, maybe 13-14 and it still worked. It had been on all those years and it still displayed the correct time.

Shouldnt you let it go down to 10% as this will make the battery last longer if your always charging it is a bad thing no?

400 charges doesn't sound like a lot at all, don't most modern devices at least do well over a thousand?

Anyway, since my iPhone is now waiting for me at home, I had a few iTunes-related questions. I still don't get how the software works. When you add music to an iTunes library, it stores it all in its own iTunes folder, right - so that you can then delete all the originals? I thought that's how it worked (on the Mac, at least), but the other day I copied a whole load of songs over into my (Windows) work PC from a hard drive (iPod), but couldn't play the files after disconnecting - it said the original files couldn't be found. Huh?

Also, are apps tied to accounts, or machines? If I buy an app on one machine, can I connect to the iTunes store on a different machine and redownload the same app? Can they then work on multiple devices? Finally, is there any way to sort apps into playlists (like with music)?

Sorry for all the questions, I've only ever used iTunes briefly but will have to learn how to use it properly now!

I'm on a 3GS now but rarely had any major problems with my 3G battery life in the year I used it (a lot!). Charged it when I went to sleep, kept a USB cable in work just in case, all good.
  • Deleted user 20 August 2009 14:41:57
I just ordered one of those Gum battery chargers for it, as on a long day away from home I will kill the battery.
  • Deleted user 20 August 2009 14:46:55
Tbh, I mainly just use mine for iPod, phone and light browsing on the road, so my usage isn't perhaps as extreme as some others might be.

Maybe the occasional gaming sesh here and there, a few quick snaps, that sort of thing.

I hope one day the idea of a solar panel underneath the screen, constantly recharging, becomes a reality. Then I will most likely pummel my iPhone! :D

I haven't charged my regular 3G battery for a couple of days now, and it's still got >75% charge left - just occasional use, the odd text message, phone calls over bluetooth and the odd playing of a game or different app, but I'm impressed with the battery.

Saying that, I have managed to get into a state where I had to charge it within a day, but that was when I really hammered it on the Cydia/iTunes app stores when I first got it.

Either way, the battery doesn't seem as bad as a lot of non iPhone owners seem to think it is!
The battery complaints are a consequence of the amazingness of the iPhone. People want to use it the whole time! ;)

On a serious note, and this conversation has been had before, the iPhone's battery compares very favourably with rival smartphones (and indeed laptops) and if you just use it as a phone it will last ages. I think it's fine.

Edit: Come on Escapist! that's no reason not to hammer it already, just charge it up when you get home, or at work/in the car?
Well, I sort of do. On the commute in and out of work I'm on it the whole time, usually listening to music, sometimes a video, other times browsing, a game, whatever.

I don't restrict myself from using it at all, guess what I should have implied is that I use it logically when the need arises and don't paw at it.

    - Whether it duplicates an original and puts it in the iTunes folder or not depends on your settings - I think the default is that it doesn't do that. Check the options, "advanced" tab.

    - Apps are tied to accounts - you can redownload them as often as you want as long as you log on with the same account, even to different computers. They work on different devices as long as they're all tied to your account.

    - I don't understand the "sort apps into playlists" question. :)

    @Kay

Go into Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced and tick for iTunes to keep your library organized and copy files to iTunes folder location when added to the library.

This should keep everything centrally located when you import music and that.

On the subject of email, I've got my gmail accounts set up through Mail and can receive no problem, but have trouble DL or opening attachments. What's all that about?
  • Deleted user 21 August 2009 08:09:52
GPush has got a slew of 1-star reviews saying it just doesn't work properly, and the dev's page reflects a lot of problems under the hood that are getting ironed out. Plus giving some third party with no real standing in the community your email login details, mmmm...

Don't know. What sort of trouble, and what sort of attachments?

Pretty much all attachments just won't open - video files particularly. All I get is the embedded image of QT or whatever, and that's it, no way to open it
  • Deleted user 21 August 2009 08:28:32
That's because the iPhone only plays one kind of video file and if the attachment isn't in that format, no dice.

Ah, that's a bit shit. The least they could do is tell me the format isn't supported. No biggie, pretty much always porn from a mate anyway. I can live without that on the move! I assume jailbreaking opens things out a little though?
  • Deleted user 21 August 2009 08:32:35
I'm not sure, but I don't think so, not when it comes ot playing video formats. I could be wrong, I only tried it on my iPod touch ages ago but went back to the official OS almost immediately, wasn't impressed.

Cheers Lou and Escapist for the advice earlier, I'll get to work on iTunes tonight.

On the subject of video files - just yesterday my brother came across a jailbroken app that plays DivX files with no resizing/compression needed whatsoever... can't remember what it was called, but I'll definitely be checking out.

Due to the wonders of the iPhone 3GS battery meter percentage, after a full battery rundown and commencing recharge on the hour, I have observed that the battery seems to gain a % of power for every minute charged.

So that's about approx 1 hour 40 minutes for a full charge then.

Will I ever get used to the iPhone having the headphone connector at the top, not the bottom, like the Touch?

/holds iPhone the wrong way round for the 200th time

The battery doesn't last very long on this thing, does it?

Acually, it does, if you use it like you normally use your mobile, ie on standby, with the odd call and SMS. But who does that? Not me. :-/

Mine seemed to lose about a quarter of its charge overnight doing fuck all.

If you've got wifi, push notifications and all those gubbins switched on, then it uses up juice considerably quicker even if you're not actually using it much.

That 'fuck all' is probably 'shitloads' and you're just a bit clueless. :)

Turn off push email notifications (drains any mobile device - and who the fuck needs email in anything less than 15 mins if they're honest), turn down the brightness, stop leaving your You Tube donkey pr0n running in a loop and you're good to go.

If push notifications are on, is just that the iPhone is idle until it's 'notified', or is it always in an active state?

For example, I get Tweets pushed through IM+, maybe 5 a day, usually over EDGE. Is my battery taking a significant hit?
