Registered 6 years agoI got one of the new Alexa-enabled Play:1s for Christmas but frustratingly you can't pair it with a previous-gen Play:1. Now it's sitting there un-used because I have no more rooms without Sonos.

Registered 16 years agoYou could add it to "Living Room 2" (or whatever) and then group them when playing music? -

Registered 6 years agoYeah that's true, but I wanted a proper stereo pair.

Registered 16 years agoAfter the escapades with the sound bar, did you not think to google if two different types of speaker would pair? -

Registered 6 years agoI didn't buy it. Someone else bought it for me thinking I needed more speakers. -

Registered 16 years agoAnyone else get the email about the original Play 5 going end of life? Essentially if it remains in your system after May then none of your speakers will receive updates and features could potentially stop working anytime after that.
Bit pissed off to be honest but nothing we can do about it. -

Registered 13 years agoNONE of your speakers receive updates? Fuck, didn’t notice that part. That’s pretty shocking. -

Registered 16 years agoThe workaround is to create a new household for the Play 5 to isolate it from the rest of the system. That kind of ruins the point of a Sonos system though but at least the other speakers will get updated.
Just makes me worry how long it will be until the original play 1 gets the same treatment. -

Registered 13 years agoYeah that’s workable for me I guess in that I don’t ever pair the 5 with any other speakers. I imagine it’s a pain to manage two households within one app though? -

Registered 7 years agoWerent they offering discounts on replacements? -

Registered 13 years ago30% off, but they’re still expensive after the discount. I’d rather just keep my perfectly-functioning device and not affect the other speakers! -

Registered 16 years agoApparently Sonos are belatedly working on a ‘quarantine’ system.
In very slight mitigation, what they are saying isn’t that much different to what happens on an iPhone or whatever.
At some point the new features baked into the firmware are beyond what old hardware can support without degrading performance, so they stop producing updates for it.
Then a third party app pushes out an update that leverages those new firmware features and *poof* you’re done.
It’s like how WhatsApp suddenly stopped working on half the phones in the third world.
Unfortunately, it’s almost an inevitability. It doesn’t mean it’s any easier to swallow and they have handled this terribly but it’s the price you pay for having a small computer with a speaker attached pumping your tunes out.

Registered 16 years agoI think the idea that the unit is effectively useless now and should just be thrown away annoys me more than anything. If I trade up they are just going to brick it despite the fact it works perfectly fine. That seems very irresponsible and unnecessarily wasteful in this day and age.
I get the fact that it is an older machine with lower specs but it feels like they could work around that if they wanted to. -

Play 5 isn't exactly a cheap piece of kit so to essentially write it off and then upsell you is a very shitty move. -

Registered 6 years agoPlay:5 Gen 1 owner here. Disappointed by this, especially when it gives my SONOT mate more ammo to constantly wheel out that particular meme. -

Registered 16 years agoBeing an early adopter, I have a number of gen1 5s (S5s as they were called) and yeah, that is a bit shit.
What worries me is that so much functionality is now based on the phone controller app and not the PC controller, that even if you wanted to stay "retro" and not update and keep the old version of the PC software installed, a lot of current functionality is likely to vanish because it's difficult to download old versions of phone apps.
I don't really use streaming services, and am quite happy with something that just plays my MP3 collection. Alexa and the like can go and fuck themselves.I'd be more than happy if never received another update, as what I liked sonos from the start for was that it did one thing well, rather thank being a multi-function device.
I might download and save the current version of the PC app locally so I've got it for future. Is there any way of downloading the sonos phone controller .apk? -

Registered 16 years agoSee, I’m exactly the opposite. Other than the initial setup or setting tweak, I never use either the desktop or the phone app.
Everything is either controlled by shouting at one of the voice enabled speakers or directly controlled through Spotify. -

Registered 18 years agoI have an old Play 1 and don't have Alexa or whatever attached, so have to use the controller (and I am one of the 3 people in the UK who uses Deezer, so no direct control). -

Registered 18 years agoI just can't be arsed to switch. I really like Deezer's algorithms and haven't been able to sort out importing my library and playlists etc into Spotify. Tried Apple and Amazon and they're not a patch on Deezer, surprisingly enough -

Registered 15 years agoI had a original 5 that properly properly died, and after a lot of calls and whinging to Sonos they replaced it with a new model one.

Registered 15 years agoDeezer/Sonos user here too, prefer the discovery over Spotify and anything else really, the lack of intergration with Sonos is a bit annoying as is the lack of gapless playback, but its nothing too terrible. Theres some 3 year old thread on the Deezer forums about them working on having Sonos as part of the app, and they are really close.. .no really guys, we are super nearly close to getting it working. -

Registered 16 years agoLot of furious amateur product development going on over at reddit. They might have a point though: the legacy units can work as just dumb clients for streaming media server. Why don't Sonos just produce a "bridge" like unit which will have the necessary hardware specs to be forwardly compatible and serve the dumb legacy units.
I'm sure people would stump up a fair bit of cash for that rather than replace multiple units. -

Think I might not bother with Sonos anymore and just go back to separates, you only need a Bluetooth receiver really.
Totally cuntish from Sonos, I've invested about 1.5k in their products, fuck them if they think I'll be buying replacements for anything that gets shut off. Wouldn't be surprised to see their product sales drop off.
