Or I could just keep what I've already got and just get an optical switch for £15. Probably the best option to be honest. Although now that that 4K TV seed has been planted if I can find a 60" with a slim frame it might fit.

What you obviously should do is look for a bigger house with a sufficiently large wall cavity. And make sure the garage is big enough for the new car you need to transport the TV with.

Ha. It's only within the last 12 months that I designed a built a stud wall with an inner frame for my TV and a shelf to match for the soundbar and tiled it with fancy cladding. It looks really good and fits my TV perfectly. Little did I know how shit my TV was and that manufacturers would phase out 59" and 60" TVs.

I've found a mid-range 55" 4K HDR Phillips TV with Ambilight for £529. It supports ARC and 5.1 Optical Passthrough and while it's smaller than my existing TV, this will allow more room for the Ambilight to work its magic. Also means I can keep the PlayBar and use it properly.

Look, I have to justify all these expenditures somehow. Plus my current TV is only 1080p and actually a fucking plasma so is definitely due an upgrade.

This must be a fairly common challenge for AV professionals. I’d be absolutely amazed if you couldn’t get some sort of bracket or padding or something to make smaller TVs fit in a bigger gap. I’d phone a home cinema specialist and see what they say.

If your TV is an old plasma then you could probably get a 65” that would be about the same dimensions as your 59” as bezels are so much thinner now. I managed to get a 49” that was the same size as my old 40” plasma. All you need is one with smaller dimensions and then I bet there’s a nice seamless way of getting it to fit.

Tbh, and no offense Hairy, I'd never build a recess of sorts to house something like this. It would always be a future proof solution, so yeah interested to see what you've done here.

Oh, the bezels on a new screen will definitely be smaller than those.

You’re right but not enough to increase from 59 to 65.

Looks fab Hairy, but yup that's exactly my nightmare. You've built yourself a hole there! No pun intended.

If there’s not enough natural light for a yucca, then fill in the hole and get a short throw projector and a pull down screen.

Ha. I measured diagonally and whichever way you look at it, there’s not enough room for 65. Just got the 55” Phillips and there’s a reasonable frame around it for the ambilight to fill. But annoyingly my tv bracket’s screws are too big. It’s going well this. 😂

I think, at this point, the best thing to do is burn your house down and start again.

I appreciate I’m late to the party here and you’ve changed TVs, but FYI ARC on older Samsung’s (and several other brands) will only ever pass through stereo.

    Question for the Beam guys.

I have 3 play 1s in the house and I'm getting a play 5 back from support any day. Is it worth using two of the play 1s for surround? It would mean sticking the play 5 in a babas room instead.

After years of varying sound setups I've found that dedicated surround speakers are only worth it for gaming, and even then only barely. Especially with all the hassle of wiring them.

But in your case there wouldn't be any wiring, and you already have the speakers, so you'd have a 5.1 setup up and running within minutes with zero costs. Just try it out and see if it's worth it to you.

I don’t have a Beam but I have 5.1 with the Playbar and two 1s and I think it’s worth it. It’s surround sound. If you watch films and games that utilise that then it’s probably worth it if you enjoy that sort of thing.

I know I can try it but it is actually a bit of trouble doing it as each speaker is set up as a room for each baba etc. and messing with it could cause certain death for me by the missus as they are used for sleep aids. I probably will give it a go anyway.

I hooked up two play1s up to see what it was like, fully intending to move them back where they lived. That was nearly a year ago and they are still there.

They make a huge difference to everything.

If it's any help, one of them came from my daughter's room and it got replaced with a cheap Echo, which she actually prefers.
