@quadfather Looks nice, but also looks like it could have done with a few minutes more on simmer.

Mussels from Tescoes tastes like actual grit. And no they don't all taste like grit, some super market mussels are nice

    Help me EG collective!

I bought a bunch of asparagus because they were cheap (6 euros the K for the fresh, local goodness!) but I'm not sure what to make of them. Literally.

Soup, no. I probably will with the leftovers at some point but not right now.

Hollandaise? Done to death. I need something else.

Um, yea, edit: so what else? :)

The visit to Sanxia Renjia I mentioned the other week ended up postponed. It happened tonight instead. Fucking hell, that was amazing.

I chickened out of the offal in the end. Instead, after a fairly normal starter, went for the boiled beef in chilli oil soup, with some noodles to dip in it. Didn't take photos because it would have made me feel like a twat, but bloody hell it was good.

The soup was clear, but so dark red as to be almost burgundy. Plenty of beef floating in it, as well as cabbage and a shitload of chopped red chillis. Flavour was amazing but heat was of the intense kind that grows and grows over the course of the meal. Covered from head to toe in a sheen of sweat by the end. Will definitely be having a Johnny Cash moment in the morning.

Nothing at all (bar the starter) like what you see in "normal" Chinese restaurants. They do have a few of the old staples on the menu, but if you order them, you're missing out.

Yes, today was proper Ring of Fire. Don't regret it at all, though.

I'm going to invent something tonight. I bought 2 small celeriacs for 2p each last week (go Sainsburys@9pm!), and made remoulade last night (to go with Japanese ginger pork (with some manky freezer pork) and pickled celery (9p each).

I was thinking all the remoulade ingredients have something Japanese I could swap in. Japanese mayo, wasabi instead of mustard, yuzu instead of lemon juice. Mix in some sliced pickled ginger, top with shakey spice power (Shichimi).

I'm going to do something with the rest of that Greek salad I think. It was good. Spicy chicken I reckon.

Did a couple of harissa lamb chops for dinner tonight. Came out very nicely indeed - among my better efforts. Just wish I'd put more thought into the veg to go with it.
