Being away on holiday together, my iBook and I have fallen in love all over again. However, having left my xboxen and high-end pc rig behind and I find that every now and then I'd need a quick gaming fix, something which I haven't really used my iBook (12" 800mhz G4, 640 MB DDR) for before. I'm thinking of slipping into town for a mac game hunt, but first I turn to you, trusted EG comrades, to hear your recommendations. Obviously, I can't have games with the highest system requirements, and playing on a lappie (mouseless at the moment!) certainly has its own requirements - I'd imagine God games and RTS's are more suited than your otherwise standard FPS-fare, for instance. Also, I note there are quite a few Tetris/Boulder Dash type freeware and shareware mac games around online, are any of these any good? What say you? |

Registered 18 years agoi picked up the warcraft 3 battlechest for £15 yesterday, has the game and the expansion pack, works on mac and pc, minimum mac requirements are around 600mhz g3, so it might be just the sort of thing you need. -

Warcraft III. Will run perfectly. You do need to get the updates from Blizzard. Just connect to multiplayer within the game and it'll download. Worth it's weight in gold. Get the Battlechest version as the expansion is equally good.
Age of Mythology. Flawless. No slowdown. Perfect. Stunning graphics, one of my favorites.
Age of Empires2. Should you wish something a little older.
Civ3. Runs flawless. Otto complained he'd lost 5 hours to the game last night!
Neverwinter Nights. Will run on medium settings and you can also use the PC Expansions on the Mac version. Yay.
Diablo2. PC/Mac version. You should be able to pick it up for a tenner. Get the expansion (LoD) if you wish to run at a higher nicer res. Works well in OSX once you've got the patches for it.
FPS.....probably not the best. Varying results from the MacNN forums, but the general agreement is to take settings down. It's only a 32MB card, so I'd stick to RTS stuff personally. MOHAA on my 800 is GAH. Especially once you've gotten used to the 9800 card on a PC. -

Get on Bit Torrent or Kaza or whatever, and get yourself a load of Snes ROMs. Repeat with Genesis emulator. Seriously the best thing I have ever done. Oh and also get -

I have Tropico, haven't played much yet but seems very nice indeed.
Tropico is another excellent game available for OS X which I haven't got my hands on yet but which would be great to play on your iBook.
BTW, the Baldur's Gate you mention is through Virtual PC or is there a Mac Version? -

Registered 20 years agoThey is a Mac version of the whole series. BG2 and TOB (the expansion) are readily available and OSX/OS9 compatible.
BG1, however, you have to hunt down. I got mine from Amazon, but I reckon you'd be better off getting the first running through emulation. It's not that taxing and you can pick up the PC BG+TOSC(expansion) for a tenner.
I think Otto-san is running via Virtual PC with BG. I still don't think he'll ever finish it though.gif)

Registered 20 years agoHow about some old-style point'n'click goodness with SCUMM VM? Of course, you'll need to find the actual games yourself, but that shouldn't be too hard...

Registered 19 years agoActually, all you need is Nethack.
It's the best game ever, runs on everything with a bit more power than a steam-powered typewriter, and best of all - it's free. Diablo.... pfffft

If you don't fancy the low resolutions you can always make it slightly better with the filters the latest versions of ScummVM have. I'm partial to Super 2X Sai. -

Civ3. Runs flawless. Otto complained he'd lost 5 hours to the game last night!
Other recommendations: Baldur's Gate 2; Fallout, Fallout 2; Caesar III; Warcraft III; Diablo II - all working perfectly on my 1ghz powerbook - even Halo! Tropico is another excellent game available for OS X which I haven't got my hands on yet but which would be great to play on your iBook. -
Mac version. You can play the PC version through VPC, but to be honest it's a hassle up there with using freeloader and it puts me off. I just bought the Mac version of BG2 which you can get for around 25 or so. -
