After reading the article on GT5 I cannot believe this game runs at x 4 AA. I play it on 720p, in car view and the jaggies in the distance are nasty, try the Daytona course and check out the flood lights. The replays are much better because I think it uses 4x but drops the frame rate to 30fps. If PD nail a better AA solution for the final product this game will look fantastic.

Isn't it only 4 x AA in Replays? Not that I know anything about such thing.

Frankly, who cares? If the games any good, I'll get it regardless of jaggies or whatever else. Game looked fine to me and I can't believe people have time to analyse the amount of aa being used. I'm glad I have very little knowledge on this issue so I don't look for it, I just tend to enjoy the game if its any good.

I'll read the article again later but I'm sure it says it's 4x for the game. I have an unfortunate eye for jaggies as I believe that make games look nasty. PS3 in general has a issue with any kind of AA.

I do enjoy the game, but I have joined this forum to talk about the tech behind my favourite games and not the game itself.

But if you enjoy the game, why let it worry you?

God, if only it was on the 360, then it'd be perfect :(

I'm just trying to have an open debate about the use of AA in GT 5, you have to admit it takes the edge of the otherwise fantastic graphics.

Agreed Carlo, Wipeout HD looks and plays fantastic, the DF feature about it points out a view of the tricks they used to get that level of quality.

@Fonzie, I sometimes wish that I did not notice AA in games but I cant help myself lol. A good test is to play the mirrors edge demo on PS3 and 360, I'm sure you will notice the image difference.

I did notice the difference but it wasn't bad enough to stop me enjoying the game. Horses for courses I suppose. I often hear people moan about jaggies and screen tearing (Blue Dragon had a lot of this, which I have been playing recently) but it has never proved so much of a prblem to detract from my enjoyment of a game.

This is the comment by RL about GT5,

" GT5 is a very special game in that while it runs with 2xMSAA in 1080p mode, at 720p, it renders at 1280×720 but invokes 4xMSAA - one of the few games on PS3 that actually does this."

I think we're well within our right to analyse the amount of AA used as a large chunk of the development time is spent on its graphics.
Also, PD have been promising AAx4 for every game since GT3, surely the PS3 is capable? wih 1080p?

    Edit*
I guess 720p will look good enough then

I agree Javvyman, did you see the E3 footage, this is supposed to be taken from the game replay mode. I think they could nail 4x AA if they take some of the cars of track, do we need 20 plus?

hey mi g yeah man the AA in gt5p does slightly tarnish the graphics its definitely got the best lighting engine in sim business on consoles but im still perplexed by the fact that they support 1920x1080 with no AA. in the car showrooms this is what it says on beyond 3d forums. 1080p mode is 1280x1080 (2xAA) in-game while the garage/pit/showrooms are 1920x1080 with no AA. 720p mode is 1280x720 (4xAA)

Good point about the lighting Dan, when you drive out of the tunnel on the High speed Ring it looks great. I can can cope with the lack of AA in the races, but in the garage view in ruins cars like the F50 with the rear grill jag fest.

It's just an arsey way of saying 'what is...' by using extra words which don't add any more meaning. Used by 1990s game magazines in increasingly long and drawn out variations.

ive learnt some interesting facts about gt5p AA from kaz over at beyond 3d forums who collaborates with DF
he confirms that gt5p is indeed 4xMSAA in 720p mode but that proper hdr lighting buffer and stark light and dark contrast can highly affect MSAA and sometimes even nulify it so thats why it looks quite jagged 4 a 4xMSAA game and trust me this guy knows what hes talking about u can ask DF foundry staff about him

no im talking about the hdr back buffer look im not a tech master you have 2 look up Beyond 3d forums
the gt5 thread im telling you that kaz guy knows what the hell hes talking about trust he wouldn't help out DF if he didnt know his stuff hes the guy who telling us all just from some direct feed screen shots
by the way the main thing im talking about is how hdr can kinda nullify msaa/ cause of tone mapping
