:( I don't want to stop playing as Akiyama tbh. Decisions decisions. VF Pachinko FTW!

Yeah, his fighting style is pretty much the polar opposite of Mr A's. Switching from all quick kicks and combos, to throws and charge attacks meant a certain familiar someone handed me my arse a few times. :)

    @Rauha. An apt comparison.

He absolutely panelled me! I put it down to the fact that I didn't want to win against him. :) Getting much better with Saejima now though. He reminds me of the Hulk with the heat build up taunt. The downside is that he refuses to take part in a karaoke session - singing isn't his scene apparently!

Week off holiday starts tomorrow, perfect timing. Hai-YA !

For anyone worried about leaving Akiyama, I'll point out the Saejima kicks ass too even if he is a bit of a paedo. :)
I was wondering what you meant by what's under the spoiler tags, and then *bam*. What's kind of amusing/kind of disturbing is that Kiriyu left him alone with Haruka before AND after finding out about his dry spell. Great parenting skills right there.

Assuming you're talking about who I think you're talking about, I had a teeny weeny bit of trouble an' all. It was such an unexpected difficulty spike that I thought I was supposed to lose...

Also, puffy jackets! Haven't heard that phrase since the Digitizer days. Good times.

Maybe! Didn't get the reference this morning.

The game really opens up at that point. Manholes, IF-7, The Master ( the spinning charge move is excellent ), the warren-like tunnels, pickpocket kid side missions and, last but not least, Purgatory Okinawa as a playable locale may be gone but the new underground is more extensive than it first seems.

I just did the "Lovely Hana" substory :D - Oh Gawd that was classy. I love her too! More so, even from the The End demo, you can tell she'll be awesome in that too!

"The Fate of the 30 million Yen" substory though :D provided some unintended lols At the end, after you beat the father to death. He replies with come on guys lets have money bath; response from his daughter "Oh you're the best" - *cringe*

2 hours of substories and researching Rio; because real Yakuza men always do their research ;)

About 10+ hours in and loving it! So far this is my favourite Yakuza game!! Still on chapter 3, trying do to as much things with Akiyama as possible. I find myself spending way too much time in the gambling hall.. I got my first million there. Also, I have to say I absolutely love the new ping pong mini game, I'm IFRC 71st in the rankings.

On a side note I chose a NORMAL difficulty setting and I find the game way TOO EASY and my character is overpowered. I wish I could change it. Does anyone else feel the same?

    Edit: spelling.

Playing with Tanimura now, he has a nice flowing fighting style if a slightly disconcerting at first run anim.

Found the latter part of Saejima's segment a little restrictive but you can see why it was done and it has the benefit of making post-game stuff much more worthwhile and fresher.

Regarding Tanimura, if you don't like chases, then you might not like his segment too much. It's fun though. Little side missions come over the earpiece radio - simple but worthwhile. The Chinese quarter opens up with him also.

I've put about 10 hours into it so far and haven't really progressed much aside from wasting most of my money on escorts (sorry, hostesses) and kicking the hell out of random street thugs.

As it's my first stab at a Yakuza game the only downside I'm finding so far is why I took so long to start playing.

I'm half-way through part 3 and I be lovin' it. I wasn't too fond of Saejima's fighting style (nor his segment of the story, which mainly consisted of going from one place to another looking for people) but Tanimura's speedy attacks and parries are much more to my taste.

And I'm #7 in the darts bulls-eye rankings with 23 bulls... though last time I checked there's less than 100 people in total on the leaderboard :-|

Oh man I'd totally forgotten about Mack! That 'yeah' noise he makes while he's talking makes me chuckle every time, especially with the OTT arm gestures :)

And then there's that first Revelation... I mean W.T.F? This is why I love Yakuza!

I really can't believe how huge this game is.
So far I've spent over 20 hours and I'm just onto Part 2.

    Absolutely loving it so far.

Currently at 36 hours, on the Finale, where you can chop and choose who to play, toggle night/day, and round off all those substories, challenges, keys etc. with the combined inventory.

The best implementation of ease of completion throughout the series, rather than the old "missed it, tough" of old. Only issue is whether I'll actually get past this and actually finish the bloody game ! Makes the Premium Adventure a bit redundant though, bar those alternate costumes, no ?

Highlight so far: Urban Hero substory.

Hi there! Me and a pal do a video game show online (who doesn't?) and we just finished our review of Yakuza 4 this morning. If anyone fancies a swatch, click on the linky link.

I agree with the chaps above about Part 3. Tanimura's story and fighting style are probably my favourite having completed the game. Saejima is fun to go, but he's more about blocks and waiting for openings, because he can be slower than a week in prison.

    Favourite Substory is Green Shadow.

Very well done video review there; just having a look at the retrospective before I go nab Y4. Not having played the other 3 is this going to be a confusing mess story-wise?

Both Yakuza 3 and 4 have a ten minute refresher on all the previous games, so it's still worth buying 4 if you've not played one or two. Although, Y3 is so cheap in some places that it's worth buying anyway! Glad you liked the review!

The Yakuza storylines are always complex, even if you've already played the preceding entries.

There's an in-game family tree sort of thing in 3 and a character list in 4 that you can refer to for info on characters you've met. The info updates as the story progresses with any changes in motivation or status reflected.

    It's very handy.

    Favourite Substory is Green Shadow.
    Just cleared it. I lol'd.

Just KKs sub-stories to clear, and I think it'll be time to fire on with the story, while I remember who's done what to who and why.......

I'd also recommend The Shinjuku Incindent as a lovely tale of illegal Chinese immigrants and their involvement in the Japanese/Tokyo underworld, featuring Mr Jackie Chan in a straight role, with lots of little shots of the real locations Kamarucho is based on. Decent film, with some similar OTT moments.
