Registered 15 years agoSpecial Reserve was brill. I used to get all my mail order stuff from them back in the day. Their adverts were always so enticing in the back of mags. -

Registered 17 years agoI remember outing a guy on SR reviews, he was blatantly going to a games site (games revolution I think) and copy and pasting the reviews to try and win the free game of the day.
I got a lot of stick from the other forumites for doing that as it was my first post ever, so they thought I was there to cause trouble or something.
Actually I don't understand why I got stick, since I provided them with evidence of someone trying to swindle them. -

Registered 13 years agoThere was a Special Reserve practically next door to my Secondary School in Chelmsford. Used to pop in there after school most days to see if they would let me and my friends play the display N64. Bastards rarely did.
I joined their club thing to get money off games as well when I bought my N64 and remember getting a crap Tamagotchi clone the first year, and then that rubbish Turok Deathmatch game (can't remember the exact name) the next year. -

Heh, Me and friend got kicked out of Tandy a few times for playing on the Master Systems. It was a bit cheeky taking their display PC joysticks, and plugging them into the display Master Systems. -

the forum was a nest of a particularly insular self-referential internet cynicism. a small scion exists on a private forum, which i still frequent on ocassion. It's the most insular place ever, haha. I'm in the club though, obvs. -

What if I was saying it ironically? -

Did a Wikipedia search for Special Reserve and it just directs me to a military article

I have a long an illustrious history with SR. Members for years, then forum regular, loads of friends worked there, now the remnants/outcasts (aka "winners") and I chat elsewhere but lots of fond memories.
Except the time I paid £60 for SF2 Turbo on the MegaDrive (which I still have). -
It was just a mail order retailer, monkey_man. Look to the future, not the past. -

Registered 16 years agoYeah this thread has only just come to my (and others) attention too. The history of SR would make a pretty interesting book...but only from an insider-outer perspective. There's a facebook page with pictures of the old staff getting up to larks - you can really tell they had fun. -

I remember my dad taking me to SR to buy Magic Pockets - what a game! what a theme tune!!
SR were very expensive though. -

Registered 15 years agoI remember them - i had several games on pre-order when they went bust and i lost about 80 quid (they took the money straight away when you placed an order).
So i remember them, but not very fondly. -

Registered 16 years agoLoved Special Reserve, my parents used to post my orders on the form you got in the back of the magazine! I distinctly remember wanting Skitchin' with my birthday money, but my Dad was unsure as it only got something like 67% in Sega Power (I won, and loved it), always really exciting waiting for the delivery...which in those days used to arrive in plenty of time to have a quick play before school.
Unfortunately I once bought one of their dreadful own-brand 'Dragon' Mega Drive controllers, big mistake. -
I remember getting Sensible Soccer from them. I also went into the Chelmsford branch. Special Reserve DID have a price edge on a lot of places but over time that advantage started to vanish. -
Used buy games mail order from them downunder via mailorder, games were a 3rd of the price evening factoring in exchange rates.
