The guy dies at the start of the film because he's spreading his DNA through the waterfall, spreading his seed to create life on the planet. The fact that humans share the engineers DNA means that at one time an engineer came to Earth and drank the goo and crumbled and spread his DNA on our planet, creating us.
Oh yeah right - my bad. I think I did actually work that out at the time, but it was ages and I just remember being confused at that bit at the beginning.

Still seems a bit unnecessary and ridiculous, as surely anyone capable of making the goo could find a less painful way to copy his DNA ... a cheek swab and a DNA replicator? I guess you can just say that they're aliens and therefore have alien motives, and if the rest of the film hadn't been such a mess, I'd probably have accepted it.

Anyway. Let's all agree to hope that the next film is better?

This movie looked great, but was gash... Ridley Scott cannot be trusted with a Blade Runner sequel.

What was the last good thing he's directed?

Gladiator, was in 2000 ffs! The guy is a dud. American gangster and Black hawk Down were decent... So that's maybe 3 movies in 14 years.

The Counsellor is by all account a really special kind of terrible.

Exodus will be a disaster as well no doubt. Interesting how biblical epics are back in vogue though.

I can't decide what's more hilarious. Russell Crowe as Noah or Christian Bale as Moses.

Noah is a weird one. Apparently the word 'God' isnt spoken a single time in the entire movie and its more a story about environmentalism.

By all accounts, its a stretch to even call it a biblical epic.

Aronofsky has been an extremely solid pair of hands u pto this point so I'd be surprised if Noah wasn't in the very least interesting.

Reviews have been pretty polarised, which is generally a good sign imho. Good art generally is polarising.

In quite a few places they aren't holding critic screenings for Noah, which tends not to bode well.

    It does look shit though.

It's also very hard to see the wood for the trees when it comes to reactions to religious films. Passion of the Christ was actually a very good film but it was impossible to tell from the range of reactions to it.

    Probably Texas and Oklahoma.

Yeah, given it's a religious epic that also promotes the theory of evolution, it's going to piss off pretty much everyone.

One of my favourite films is Elmer Gantry, which if you take the sweeping view that organised religion is bollocks (which I by and large don't) adds an additional angle of appeal to what's otherwise a straight satire on evangelicalism. Genius movie.

Maybe a stupid question, but how does it support evolution?
I don't know, I haven't seen it, but that's supposed to be one of the key things.

I believe it has a scene in it where Noah recounts the biblical tale of creation to his family while visuals of a big bang type thing are shown, along with an asteroid hitting earth creating the moon and also the first dna being formed.

If thats not it then I dunno.

I love the story of Noah, I know it well, read this interesting article on it earlier which makes the film sound interesting too

Oh I thought you just meant Noah's arc story in general. Maybe he just takes a big vat of primordial goo on a rowing boat and all the animals just evolve from it. It would probably make more sense than the actual story.
    Maybe Noah is an engineer.

Some of the car chases fall a little flat though.

The entire concept is based around an impossible and stupid situation. Couple that with the fact that its supposed to have actually happened, then yes I'd say its more ridiculous than a lot of fictional stories.
Why would it be impossible to gather two of every sort of living thing of all flesh (i.e. insects can go fuck themselves)? Difficult and a tad time consuming perhaps, but not impossible.
