I like to keep my expectations low. This way I'm rarely disappointed.

I just looked him up on imdb.com... they say there are 2 alien prequels lined up. One is due in 2013 and the other in 2014.

We've got a ways to go...

I think it'll all hang on who they cast as the main central character. It's always been assumed that the lead will be female and continue with the tradition of the Alien series. Not got a problem with that at all. It all depends on who they cast.

With it being in 2 parts, will the first one be sombre and moody and the next a bit more action?

Virtually every actress has been linked with it. With any luck it'll be suitable and not someone like Emma Watson, Milla Jovovich etc.

My choice would be Winter's Bone actress Jennifer Lawrence.

    Winter's Bone: Now there's a good film.

If Milla Whatsherface was in it then I would avoid it like the plague. Only good film she's been in is Fifth Element.

    The Alien prequel is dead.

It´s now called Prometheus and it has nothing to do with the Alien universe.

Honestly, I think its a good thing. I can't stand prequels, and this sounded shit anyway. I am glad they are making something more original now.
  • Deleted user 14 January 2011 23:46:27
I bet the alien prequel would have been better!

I dunno, you can only go s far with a prequel, you have to tread carefully with the story, especially with a loved series like this. I think it had failure written all over it personally. A new, more modern movie could be made that could be as good. It could be shit too, but I think its better to risk it than to churn out another sequel/prequel/reboot. These quotes fill me with hope.

Lindelhof: In a world flooded with prequels, sequels and reboots, I was incredibly struck by just how original Ridley’s vision was for this movie. It’s daring, visceral and hopefully, the last thing anyone expects.

Scott: I couldn’t be more pleased to have found the singular tale I’d been searching for, and finally return to this genre that’s so close to my heart.

We've already got two decent Alien movies, and two half-decent ones. Do we really need another?

Well possibly it's a case of too much time having passed now, and too much speculation and ideas around about what could possibility exist in an Alien prequel that it would never be able to live up to that.

Maybe there was never going to really be an Alien film, they just used it to drum up a bit of hype, hoping that the fans will tune in for this project. I'm slightly dubious that people like Scott and Lindelhof would set out to do Alien and then switch it up, in such a public manner.

By all means make a Alien prequel but wait until shitfest 3D movies die a good death. Alien is about as far removed from digital cinema wankery that you could get.

As for 3D and 2D, if I hear a film is native 3D that kills my interest stone dead, as it should do with anyone who remotely has a brain as far as films go. Directors who have worked with the tech are already admitting privately that they don't believe there is a sustainable visual language for 3D films, such that it will only ever be suited to the kind of 'JAWS 3D' type schtick. The expense of the entire process basically requires bums of seats, and you only get that by making a certain kind of mindless popcorn fodder. Thinky films in 3D? No.

I'm actually glad they're doing a different film to an Alien prequel. I was struggling to see how a prequel could really be done. I wanted the 'Jockey' to stay unexplained and I didn't want any rampant revisionism to piss all over the canon.

I am happy with the jockey being unexplained but at the same time, for example, I'm gagging to play Colonial Marines, which is going to be an expansion of the canon, if it ever arrives.
  • Deleted user 15 January 2011 01:44:34
While I think an Alien prequel is possible, I ultimately think it is pointless. The original is a horror movie in space, the second an action movie in space, and the other two, well never mind about those.

What would a prequel be? Modern horror is pretty clichéd, so Scott would have to do something pretty spectacular to get anywhere near the same level of shock as Alien. And if that amounted to 3D chestbursting and 3D Alien mouth opening shots, then I think this movie is better off dead.

The xenomorphs are such a well realised species that I just wish for a decent disaster movie where they get to earth and humanity is literally fighting to survive. Done well that would be frikkin' awesome.

Call it Alien Apocalypse, shoot it in black and white and let the Oldboy director helm it and I bet you'd have something truly horrifying to take it back to its roots.
