it used to constantly update and there was an actual flip animation in the original rom but it caused large amounts of lag when flicking between screens. This is the workaround that came in the updated rom. I think that the majority of issues you're having with it are actually the sense ui.

Phattso that's a feature to show off the animation. The clock in the top right corner of the screen is always right though.
Yeah, nothing quite like having to squint at a tiny set of characters in the top right when there's a nice massive (and entirely wrong) indicator slap bang in the middle of the screen. The UI is riddled with things like that, sadly. The delay to update conversation/message threads is bordering on unusable, too.
In its favour are the excellent form factor, the right dimensions for usability without being too chunky to slip into a pocket, the excellent speaker quality and mic pickup, and the fast text entry. And since that's mainly what I bought it for the rest doesn't matter so much.
But the problems do tarnish an otherwise superb little device, and most of them seem like they should have been quite easily solved by now. Maybe in the next device..gif)
mine is rooted with ahero (soon to be vanillain rom) and its really quick. i prefer the stock look over sense ui anyways so my next phone is going to be a nexus or similar device. I'm not going for a custom ui overlay next time. -

Fundamentally it's a good phone and messaging platform - my niggles (blatant clock fuckery aside) relate more to the 'smart' features which I'm not a massive user of anyway. Good sound quality, decent text entry, job done.
I'm certainly not about to start flashing different ROMs onto it - although maybe I'll put one of my own on at some point, as I have actually built an Android image from source.

Maybe if people could be more descriptive than just saying the interface is 'clunky'; what does that even mean? You sweep across homescreens with a finger, and the stuff on those screens is 100% down to you. I have one displaying automatic Facebook updates, BBC news headlines and the weather, and another with widgets that call or text my main contacts.
I am however, probably about to get hold of a Desire. Would be perfectly happy with the Hero, but the opportunity has arisen for free and I won't turn it down. -

I don't even recall anyone using that word?.gif)
More descriptive? We were: The main clock takes upwards of four seconds to refresh, this is a ballache if you want to check the time. The message thread feature can take upwards of 20 seconds to populate, and when you swipe up and down between people it often takes a second or two to fetch the data and display it, and sometimes even duplicates entries! For many people (myself included) after a while it won't connect to a WiFi router, necessitating power cycling of both devices.
These are all common, consistent, and very real problems. Wonderful if you don't have them, of course - I couldn't be happier for you.
My complaints have also been tinged with positivity, they're not just whining. I like the form factor. It's a good phone (as in for making calls and managing contacts). The text entry is great also. Just a shame those other niggles let the package down. -

Registered 13 years agoTrying to pin down when this fucking thing will get a 2.1 update is nearly impossible. A range of beardy tech sites have information ranging from outdated news of a potential release in March, to a rumoured date around mid-april - some have even claimed that it's been scrapped altogether, others report that employees have been issued with final test versions.
And what any of this means for my specific, bullshit 'G2 Touch' version, I have no idea. -

Say I have to phone a company and it's a "press 1 for x"-style deal. By the time I've found that out the screen's gone off and I have to unlock my phone, which automatically disconnects the call. Obviously I just bring up the virtual keypad straight away second time, but it's a pain to have to ring up twice. Is there a way to stop that happening? -

That'd be great! I know fuck all about the phone. I downloaded a few apps when I first got it, but I haven't really done that since. What would you say are the essential apps to have? -

Hold down the Home button and you can choose from the last six apps you had running. Erm, multitasking!! (why aren't there people fawning over it?
)
What else can it do, I can't remember. There's a huge thread over at XDA devs. com somewhere. Loads of good tricks liek if the phone is ringing, turn it sharply upside down to go in auto-silent mode. -

Anyone who hates the Hero's keyboard and general text input setup should give Shapewriter a go, it's brilliant. I find it much quicker than typing, plus you don't have to delete the whole word you've just typed in if you accidentally select the wrong word from the predictive text suggestions. You just reselect the word and it pops up the suggestions again.
http://www.shapewriter.com/ it's on the Android marketplace, free.
it's made me like my Hero again, instead of counting down the days until I can swap it for an iPhone (only 14 months to go! haha) -

Registered 18 years agoWhat bugs me with the Hero lag is when I press the phone button to call someone. This brings up a list of last dialed numbers, so I go to press one of those numbers but just before my finger hits the screen, the list gets repopulated with more recent numbers and I end up tapping the wrong number. -

Registered 17 years agoI really don't know what phone/firmware Phatt is using but that reads nothing like my hero experience.
Not doubting the validity of the statement, but I just don't recognise it.
Also, as for the time, just press menu once and the lock screen appears with the time on it. Not a soluition to the slow clock, and not an excuse for it, but you said you check the time often. -
You could also use one of the many other clocks that are available other than the built in clocks. Few of them use that animation. -

I believe it's an Orange issue - it's still running a very very old firmware from before all the issues were fixed. Even trying to get it direct from HTC that's the case. Sure I could get all subversive and install a generic ROM but I've settled into just using the thing to make calls and send texts, both things it did admirably before.
