Pretty much the same interface as the mini, which works very well for me.

    WTF?

    9/11 the Iran connection?

Are they going to try and link Iran to 9/11 so they can justify regime change there?

    I noticed that as well.

You just know it's coming though.

I had read on some mac rumour site that they would be offering them in different colours also. However I think that sticking to white would be better as they already have a very strong brand identity. Is there any detail ony any new or improved features yet?

Some more details, shamelessly stolen from a posting on slashdot:

    Highlights:
    Click Wheel
    12-hour playtime
    Multiple on-the-go Playlists
    Delete songs from OTG Playlists
    Audiobook tempo adjustment
    No more 15 gig model
    $100 Cheaper

    Speculations:
Uses the same processor as the iPod Mini.
There will be a 60gig iPod to fill the top price slot later.

60gig!?!?! Who's gonna fill that when the estimated life of any HDD device is only 3/4 years?
Hard disks should last quite a bit longer than 3/4 years, unless they are being heavily used, which is not going to be the case with an mp3 player.

    Saw it this morning
I'm so fucked up. Been yearning for it since I first saw the 1st gen iPow and when I finally get it, the following day they announce the new models.
I mean, I don't even have it yet! (ordered it yesterday from the online Apple Store)
I want the (any!) iPod so bad, but I'd rather have the 4G iPod than the 3G one, if they are released in Europe soon (one month or so).
When do you think this is gonna be released here in Europe? I'm not into Apple's release policies, but from what I know they usually release their new products just a few weeks after their unveiling (in the US, that is)
And do you think if I send an email to the Apple Store they would let me wait and the the next gen iPod instead of this one?

Apple seems to be slightly better than most other companies in this regard, don't they have a policy that you can upgrade to a newer version of OS X for free when you buy a Mac provided that it comes out within a few months of the date of purchase?
I remember looking into this when I bought a powerbook and 10.3 came out a few months later (not eligible unfortunately). Could just be a local thing though, I'm not sure.

I think I'll stick to the 3G iPod (the thing is too darn sweet to wait that much), at least tomorrow when they unveil it I see it's much better than the 3G and my iPod's not shipped yet -but I doubt there's that much of a difference.
btw, how are your experiences with the iPod? (especially the 3G one)

    Thanks
It's nice to hear that when they unveil a new one just the day after you got it lol
I went for the 15G one, too. Only have 4.6 gigs of music in my HDD at the moment, so it'll take a while for me to fill it.

I doubt they'll be able to shrink them down much, you're getting near the size limit of the drive platters as it is, so its just squeezing the rest in about that where you'll save space.

Unless they've moved to a smaller hard drive format. But, unless drive technology has passed me by in the last few months, I don't think hitachi, or anyone else, has announced a large capacity (20 gig +) drive smaller than the one in the current iPod generation.

From what I read, the 3G iPods (the smaller 15GB and 20 GB ones, I suppose) are just 1mm thicker than the 4G ones. Not a big difference if you ask me.
edit: btw, could someone tell me how current's iPod scrolling wheel works? The truth is that I haven't had the chance to play with one yet :/

    o_O

Even as a music fan I can't say I'd ever even own that much music. What's that? At 128kbps, 50MB per album, 20 albums per gb, 2,000 albums?

    I don't even own 200

At 160kbps its about 1000 albums.

I have 518 albums on my MP3 player at the moment and have used 31GB.

It's the Sony one that doesn't play MP3s isn't it?

There's a few different Sony ones, some play MP3s, some don't, some convert them when transferring ont the player.

I do believe thats a conversion on transfer job that one.

    AKA complete waste of time.

£220 for a 20GB and £300 for a 40. Add in the student discount and a 40GB model delivered for £275 with a free engraving on the back right now. That's about the same price my mate paid for a 20GB 3G only a few months back.

As the Apple laptop has been so good to work with and I'm so tired of waiting for a compact 60GB model or wifi/NAS based mp3 player (and most importantly payday is the end of the week) I suspect I could be posting in the iPod owners thread before long.

Hmmm, 40GB model no longer includes the wired remote (£30) or carry case (£30) so that isn't looking nearly as much of a hot deal as I'd originally thought.

/watches doubt rise about new purchase

everyone knows that the carry case that you get with em is practically worthless though. nothing more than a stop-gap til you get a proper case of some description. and some people (otto) don't like the remote control either, although i consider it to be essential myself.

The zen is compact, and 60gb. Its about a mm thicker than the ipod and about a cm each way longer. Hardly giant is it?

I use the case to store it. When in use it's as naked as a just born baby :)

    >Mine hasn't been used in over a year.

/hatches cunning plan to half inch Otto's iPod remote without him ever noticing

    >How do you get the student discount?

Click Education in the online store and enter in a uni name and city it is located in any suddenly all the own brand stuff drops in price a bit. AFAIK they don't really check it and it is for anyone working in education so the likes of Peej will be eligable (unless he quit and I haven't noticed the thread).

    >The zen is compact, and 60gb.

I have a mate with a Zen. He swears at it a lot and has had to send it back several times to get it fixed. It often doesn't link up to his computer when plugged in. I would like to say that I fully expect this to be just one unlucky user out of millions of satisfied customers but being a PC guy I've had to deal with Creative and know their ways. If it costs more to conform to a standard then get almost there for less and blame the other guy, if it stops working blame the user and just don't RMA half your customers. Not smart thinking but they manage to get to power with brute force and patented technology thrust upon content creators. If you talk to anyone who put together machines a few years back about the whole Creative/VIA thing you get the view that Creative really are the root of all evil. I'd rather not put any trust in them.

My iPod owning friends don't swear at their iPods and as I'm enjoying the Mac experience of my iBook I'll loan them a bit more trust in quality products.

They probably would, sopaman (unless it's shipped already), though it'd mean you'd be waiting for another two or more likely three months. Or four. :)

Well I do sympathise but then that's life as a gadget buyer. :)

The way it works with the software is that if you buy a new Mac on or after the date that they announce a new update to the OS, then you can get the update for free (assuming your new Mac hasn't shipped with the new version). If you order something and it hasn't shipped then you'd probably be able to get away with cancelling the order and pre-ordering the new one, but I wouldn't swear to it.
