Seeing as Daniel Hannan is actually a local [South-East] MEP, I've decided to drop the wanker a steaming pile of e-mail in his inbox:

    "Dear Sir,

I was simply mortified to find that a British MEP, and no less one for my region, has so vehemently and unjustifiably criticised an institution that benefits tens of millions of British citizens and is rightly considered a national treasure, and even worse - on American television! Perhaps even more unbelievable is the fact that you chose to prostitute yourself on the widely maligned Fox news channel, although whether this was simply because the many reasonable, intelligent news channels in the US such as ABC, CBS, MSNBC and CNN wouldn't listen to you or simply because you stand to benefit from a cushy job at News Corp International when you fail to retake your seat in the 2014 elections is up for debate. In my eyes, as an unaffiliated voter, it amounts to a betrayal of both the British and American public; we have been backstabbed by one of our own through your vitriolic and roundly incorrect portrayal of our NHS as some kind of failed antique, whilst the American public - a specific 47 million of them to be precise - may well have been betrayed in being told to seek alternatives to government intervention at any level in public healthcare. I can see now why the Conservatives have shafted you into a European seat - your unique brand of fallacious rhetoric is completely out of touch with the mainstream British public who would vote, or wouldn't in your case, in a general election; notably the 92% of NHS patients who were satisfied with it's quality of care last year, compared to substantially lower figures in the US. The fact that every single other developed nation on Earth, sans the USA, has implemented state-subsidised or state-owned healthcare, is a broad condemnation of your antiquated viewpoint, and this affirmation of state-backed care speaks volumes more than your elitist, supposedly libertarian ideals.

If you have any shred of decency left within you, you would resign. You do not represent the views of your constituents and you have betrayed the people of two close nations with one fell swoop. I am disgusted, and suffice to say that if you stand in 2014, I will do everything in my power to remind the voters of the South-East, notably Kent, just what your opinion on our most important national institution is, and why you cannot be trusted to represent our views accurately even in a non-sovereign forum such as the European Parliament.

    Indignantly yours,

    me"

I forwarded your email to Daniel Hannan again from my account in the hopes that it definitely would get read.

I was quite frankly shocked at your recent whoring of yourself out on the "respectable" Fox News channel and believe that you are a failure as politician. But this aside, in the interest of such a great piece of text being ignored by you, I decided to forward it to you.

    "Dear Sir,

I was simply etc etc etc...

Great read AC. Why not title it 'Open letter to Daniel Hannan' and send it to some reader's columns? At least try the local papers, if any.

That's an idea. I'll write in to our two locals. Anything I can do to get this elitist scumbag out of my European constituency for good is time well spent in my books.

It seems Daniel Hannan is not the only Tory with his views. Listen to the radio 4 interview with another Tory MEP Roger Helmer near the bottom of this link.

He wants more private finance initiatives... and that if you can pay, America is a better place to fall ill... I assume he does realise that the insurance companies do not always pay out...

Can anyone else see the parallel between the witch hunt against people who publically make their case for a disagreement with something a great many people hold deal to an ideal that is not represented in truth?

Of course there are differences but like the Aston Martin to the Chevy Malibu, in the end they are all being driven by petrol.

I don't trust the tories and I will be glad for witch hunts that damage their overall credibility, let people see below the well oiled PR machines and ask questions.

Some of what that MEP says has merit, but at the same time, I doubt it resonates that well with his constituency - and in that case the people there will have to at some point decide how far off his views are from theirs.

(and I don't think I really understood much of what you wrote there...)

Ach, he's only an MEP :) Probably just angling for a better paid job, maybe with Fox as suggested earlier.

And it's ok NBZ. It does make, well, not perfect sense but is coherent. From a certain point of view :)

AphoticCosmos have you sent that yet? You might also want to point out to him that he might like to do some fact checking first in future. He clearly has no idea how short waiting list actually are or the fact that you can nominate to go on an all expenses paid surgery trip to a European hospital if the wait is over a certain time. Also the fact that we're well ahead of the US in the World Health Organisations in rankings:

It means the WHO don't do the ranking any more because it's to complicated and as we know, the NHS has better waiting lists now then 10 years ago, so it could only be a good thing for us.
