He should lose his citizenship as well, he's not even based in this country. I don't see anyone saying that the NHS is perfect because it obviously isn't. I do like how Hannan didn't attack it so openly when in this country, but instead ripped it to pieces when in America.

It's a typical politician move, difference is Mr Hannan seemed to forget the world is a hell of a lot smaller now with the internet and if he so much as farts in America, british voters will find out.

Either that or he's got bored at being a MEP and wants to get a nice fat consultancy job for a health insurance company in the US. He has effectively ended any chance of being a fully fledged MP for the Tories for the next few years atleast.

To me he just seems like giant sycophantic suck up. He's found an American audience that will love him, and like the poodle that he is, he's wagging his tail.

He's been at this for months, it's just that it's coming to the attention of the British people now because 'bash the NHS' has been become a Republican talking point as the debate of healthcare reform intensifies.

wow the comment on that video by its uploader is both confusing and idiotic.

"Well, tonight was Hannity's turn to get an interview with Daniel Hannan, and apparently the young PEM is truly flummoxed by his appeal since his parliamentary dress-down of PM Gordon Brown. What he doesn't realize is that his warnings against socialism, a huge government and nationalized health care are resonating with a large portion of Americans right now, as Obama and his administration continue to try and wrest power FROM the people to take FOR the government.

Come on folks, do we really need any more warnings? This man has LIVED socialism, and he and many other European counterparts are sounding the warning bell loud and clear! Do we have the backbone to heed these warnings and stand up to our own government, or will we fade back into the shadows of obscurity, like sheeple thinking we have now power? I truly fear that the majority will answer to the latter, while I PRAY to God that we truly do have the former - the intestinal fortitude to do what is right instead of what is easy (i.e., the path of least resistance).

America, it's our choice to make. How will YOU choose? "

the "this man has LIVED socialism" bit made me giggle.

    From the comments:

I don’t think there’s a British man alive who loves his country more than Dan Hannan; how could you possibly say the man is “unpatriotic”? This is one man who would clearly give his life for his country.

So much so that he's spent most of his life outside the UK. Fuck that. I reckon any representative - MEP included - should actually know what it's like to live here.

    And not be a cunt.
  • Deleted user 15 August 2009 13:56:35
What a fatuous article. Yeah, Hannan did 'raise the inadequacies' of the NHS, by saying it was a mistake entirely. As if it's fucking suppressed that the NHS has problems. 'Socialist politicians'?! Jesus wept.

The majority of Americans have no idea what socialism is. Even having a government is socialism to most of them.

I think the best system would be one run by private companies which send the bill to the government's health department. This would obviously have to be heavily regulated and inspected, but then you get the benefits of both systems while reducing the negatives of both systems.

Still not going to be perfect, but it would at least make for a worthwhile experiment.

That's never (well nearly never) how it works when businesses and govt mix, you don't get the best of both, you get the worst. Beaurocracy and greed combined into one massive, expensive nightmare.

That is exactly how general practice has been funded since the NHS was founded. Hasn't worked out too badly there.

    Some time later....

Well it hasn't worked so great either. Most recent example that comes to my slightly drunk mind is when govt. effectively paid for shiny new surgeries for GPs which subsequently became the property of practice partners, cue spending spree on fancy practices at the public's expense.

I had 5 vacinations this afternoon for conditions the UK doesn't even suffer from. I laughed at the thought of this story and how i might tease any Americans i'll encounter in Thailand next month.

I had a full on cultural rainbow of doctors / nurses / surgeons / consultants when I had my recent accident and pretty much the only time I even considered the nationality of any of them was when some gammon motherfucker in the bed across from me started harassing a nurse to explain where she came from / if she'd married a Brit or someone from her own country.

We'll just ignore the irony of there being a shit load of foreign people working in the NHS currently. Racists gonna be racist.
