Turrican-like arcade game?

There's an arcarde game I once played as a nipper down at the swiming pool and can't for the life of me remember what it was. It's stuck in my mind ever since but I've never been able to track it down. Can anyone take a trip down memory lane and possibly help work out what it was?

Thinking back, it was similar to Turrican in many ways but it was a few years before Turrican, so that places it in the mid-80s. It's not Metroid, Mega Man, Targa. Or Turrican.

It was a side-scrolling platformer, but with hardly any platforms. Your character was armour space-suited like Turrican but in darker colours, brown perhaps. There were, as usual, various power-ups to collect for better weapons.

Probably the most distinctive aspect was that at the start you got to choose which planet you wanted to go to. The other thing was the level backgrounds, they were to my young eyes at least quite carefully done, usually of a planet, the cave you were in. I think there was a space-buggy section, either as part of the game or your character going from one level to another.

Needless to say it might actually be a terrible game going back to it now, but I'd love to track it down! Any ideas?

Sounds like Xain'd Sleena, or 'Soldier of Light' as it was sometimes known.
