Registered 8 years agoOk, well the mobo + cpu (i3 with a p77 mobo) was 190. That's bought. Not the cheapest, but I thought it was better to spend a few more quid on a 77 mobo, in case I ever want to upgrade bits and bobs
Still need some ram though
Let's have a quick look at those 660's then
I have a feeling I am going to go over budget here -

Registered 8 years agoOk, I've gone over budget
But not by that much. I've spent 350 which covers everything I need except for the gpu.
Need to have a shop around for something to replace the 4870. I'll have to go over budget obviously -

Registered 8 years ago660 ti for 197. This is along with a z77 mobo and an i3 cpu. Bigger monitor and ssd. Hopefully this should futureproof it a bit, even if its only the mobo. Took ages to decide on gpu and I know the ti is a cut down model but a) it'll be better than my currentone and b) I couldn't afford anything higher. Think it'll be ok?

Similar to my spec but i have a GTX670 and (pointlessly) added a pain-in-the-neck Asus Xonar DGX card.
That's an i5-2570k i take it?
Depending on the motherboard you may need to check if the memory needs to be LP (Low Profile) to ensure it doesn't interfere with the CPU cooler.
You may as well check if it's the 1.5V model as that will give you some overhead if you decide to overclock. I think -

Registered 10 years agoI was looking at getting a new PC ideally pre-built but that I can choose stuff that goes in it. I found Computer Planet and they build the PC for you, offer quite a big range of components and it all seems to be at a good price with free delivery.
What I'm hoping for now is that someone is going to recommend them and say how awesome they are and/or recommend someone better for me...

Registered 8 years ago@teamHAM - you know what, I'm bloody glad I visited that site - I've just bought some upgrades and I put in the same upgrades to compare prices. Seems ok pricewise, but I've just noticed that I have a 550watt power supply and I've ordered a 660ti. That Computer Planet site didn't like the 500 watt one and was only happy when I selected a 600 watt one
hope I've enough power to run the bloody thing
anyway, back on topic, site seems ok. Try pcspecialist.co.uk as well to compare -

Im running a 660ti on my 500watt PSU. -

Registered 10 years ago@quadfather Yeah one of the things I liked about it was that it builds it all up on screen and checks for compatibility issues such as power or motherboard conflicts etc. I know the nerds would never get that sort of thing mixed up but I guess it's great for the rest of us
PC Specialist looks good aswell thanks -

Registered 13 years agoHas anyone read up on the AMD Ram yet? Got a promo email the other day talking abut how it uses RAM in a certain way to boost speeds, but not seen any detail yet? -
I think they're just promoting their branded ram modules, but it sort of links into this:
http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/cpu/46073-amd-a10-5800k-trinity-needs-faster-ram/
And very much links into this:

That's neat. I do like the way it updates and gives you different choices based on compatibility. I also like there are more options per item than PC Specialist.

However PC Specialist seems to be cheaper for the same gear.
I'll keep my eye on both over the next few weeks as I'm going to be buying a new machine next month to celebrate my birthday - though current plans for i7 and GTX670 perhaps are outside the remit of this thread. -

Registered 12 years agoHow hard is it to install a motherboard into a system case?
It's about the only thing I haven't installed in a pc, and I'm looking at buying a mobo/cpu/mem bundle and picking up the other pieces and installing myself.
Is it as simple as 4 screws, or can things go wrong? -

Registered 11 years ago@whatthefu Simply make sure all the stand-offs are in the right places for your motherboard, put in it the case and screw it down.
Also I find it easier to install the CPU before you put the motherboard in the case, just puts less stress on the socket and makes it less fiddly for fatter fingers -

Registered 13 years ago@whatthefu Apart from making sure that you don't bend the motherboard as you tighten the screws, and follow the instructions on which little bit of cable goes where it's pretty simple.
I've built maybe 5 or 6 PC's, the last one took me about an hour or so to do the whole thing -

Registered 11 years agoAnd to avoid bending the motherboard, tighten as you would anything else.
Opposite corners first. Also making sure you only loosely tighten to begin with. It really does get easier every time. -

So, the AMD Virgo review recently got me thinking.
I'm not a hardcore gamer by any stretch, but some of the games that I am playing are starting to struggle somewhat and I'm pretty sure it's down to my CPU. I'm currently running an Athlon X2 250 with a 1GB GTX460 and 4GB of generic Corsair RAM. I've looked at i5 pricing, but for what I do it's just not really that economical.
Considering that it looks like I can get the CPU at ~£90, motherboard at ~£90 and RAM for virtually nothing, does this look like a viable upgrade for me? I have not got a lot of money to spend!
I assume that it's the CPU that isn't cutting it, but perhaps the 460 isn't cutting it either. I have no idea about the in-built graphics capability in the A10-5800K - is it better / worse than the 460? Should I be looking to get a new GFX card also?
Cheers chaps
