    @ibenam
    Any chance of getting an SSD in there? They are pretty cheap now and add so much.

    @grey_matters Did try that, I guess it depends on how cheap i get the other parts. Trying to keep the cost down to 350!

    @ibenam

    4Gb of RAM is pretty limiting.

    Ok I've added an SSD, and another 4gb of ram. Also reduced my HDD size to 500gb.

    Total cost is now 450 which is way over my budget of 350 even if i manage to get parts off eBay.

    I think the GPU price is killing me - is there another GPU which will give me the same performance at a lower cost?

    @ibenam

    I'd say the 1050ti is pretty much the minimum for 1080p and even then it won't be running the latest games with bells and whistles on.

    If you really want to downgrade there's the RX 460 but its pretty shit
    http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/best-gpus,review-33382.html

    Can i ask what you're hoping to do with this pc? What kind of games? You might just get a better experience with a ps4pro for 350 tbh

    Pricing a PC against a console never feels worth it. Due to the cost of the base components being similar whatever the spec you don't really get bang for your buck until you're in 1060 and maybe r5 1400 territory.

    @THFourteen really its to scratch a build itch but also to replace an ageing 750ti pc.

    Not looking to play the latest games with graphics ramped up etc. just aomething decent which can do everything well.

    Hi folks

    Just wondering if anyone could advise me on which of these to go for, the lenovo legion y520 or the Dell inspiron 7000. Looking at the configs with the i5 and 1050 in each model. Alternatives welcome too.

    Need the portabilitiy of the laptop unfortunately, i know i'd get much better machine going with a desktop. Thanks.

    Can someone help me understand how to get W10 on to a cheap system I'm building for my neighbour please ?

    I thought I could build a small NUC/Brix type thing for my ageing neighbour to just surf the web, but I'm not really up to speed on the options for getting W10 on the SSD. I did read something about making a bootable USB, which sounds easy enough. But what is the cheapest way to buy the actual W10 OS for the PC ? The prices I've seen online cost half as much as the PC !

    @TheBlackDog The bootable USB instal is on the microsoft site, left a old usb set up with it so never need a dvd drive on anything.

    I did the same for my granparents and made a pc for them, it had its use but they both moved onto ipads eventually, did try a laptop between too but tablets are easier all round for what they need.

    @KD Thanks. Forgot to mention that he really needs a PC of some sort as he needs to submit reports to the department of agricultural equivalent here, which is done on their website. I think he prefers that to using a tablet, plus he does have a monitor as his well old PC had finally broke down.

    Before I considering putting it on eBay or Gumtree wondering if anyone from here would like to buy my monitor?

    It's a ASUS ROG Swift PG278Q

    27" 2560x1440
    144Hz
    GSync
    Display Port
    2 x USB 2.0 ports

    Just want something a bit bigger and considering going ultra-widescreen. Looking at eBay completed listings a few have gone for 400-500 so anything around the 400 would be ace.

    Bit of a long shot but you never know so thought i'd see here lol

    Not sure if this is the best thread to ask, but is this a good deal for someone who can't be bothered to build themselves?

    https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/desktop-pcs/desktop-pcs/pc-specialist-vortex-core-xt-pro-gaming-pc-10164425-pdt.html

    I'm looking for a PC for doing work on (past experience tells me an SSD is vital but beyond that any decent modern hardware should do the job), but also a little gaming on the side. Nothing too extravagant, just future proofing being able to play things I can't get on console like Planet Coaster and Civ 6, both of which make my laptop grind to a halt after a while.

    Specs are modest but the price is not bad IMO.

    Probably be fine for playing Civ.

    Just picked up one of these second hand for a couple of hundred:

    Put DOOM on with headphones and OMFG.

    It's really nice for strategy stuff as well.

    @DodgyPast I bought an LG ultrawide, what a difference it makes on the right games, driving games and FPS's are the 2 I find are so much better and lost without it.

    Also doubles as the best thing to watch movies on, just need a better one so I can relegate my lg to the bedroom. Don't know why the newer consoles didn't support it tho.

    Geforce 1060 6GB card might be worth a look if the price is alright with you, I avoided the 1060 3GB version and went with the 1050ti with 4GB for now but kind of regretting it with the 2560x1080 res monitor I picked up later on.

    Maybe someone who actually has a AMD card can chime in, I havent had 1 for years so no idea.

    The whole 3GB issue has been overblown imho. It doesn't really become a problem until 4K (even 1440p is ok with that much memory), and the GTX 1060 isn't strong enough to run 4K in most cases anyway.

    I'd say that an RX 470 or 480 should be good for that price too, but keep in mind that more games nowadays are optimized for Nvidia cards, and even if not, DX11 games (still the vast majority now and for the foreseeable future) will usually run a bit better on Nvidia, no contest.

    Id strongly recommend getting a 4Gb card as a minimum these days, if only for a small bit of future proofing if its not required right now.

    Thoughts on mechanical gaming keyboards? I've never bothered before, but may give one a go over the festive period.

    I'd recommend a mechanical keyboard in general, whether you are gaming or not. Expensive but they last long and are more responsive and accurate for typing, imo.

    They are OK, but I wasn't bowled over with mine as I was with a decent gaming mouse.
