Really - we need to know what you want from your machine. 1080p at 60fps and you're probably pretty much there already. The jump from fat HDDs to SSDs is enormous. That alone will make your machine seem wayyyy more snappy. If budget is a concern, I'd get one of those first alongside your current setup, shove Windows on it and see how the performance is. |

Registered 4 years agoOkay I have ordered the following
- Ryzen 5 2600 at 3.9GhZ
- Gigabyte GA AB350 MOTHERBOARD ATX
- 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance RAM DDR4
I decided to keep my GTX 1060 3GB after a lot of wise words from you best nerds.
First time replacing a motherboard but I am quite excited so fingers crossed as soon as it arrives it goes smoothly -

Put the ram cpu and cooler on and then try and boot it before you bother to put it in the case.
Will save you a load of pain if it’s busted on arrival. -

I think that's what I'm planning to do just to save the hassle. Plus I have inspected on the inside of my PC too and mine is really tidy so shouldn't be an issue to replace.
Cheers bud -

Registered 4 years agoFrom what I've gathered it requires a BIOS update in able to support gen 2 CPUS. I've ordered the board from Amazon so I may or may not have to update it myself. Been in touch with the supplier just in case. -
@TitanWarlord93 The problem is you may not be able to update the BIOS without a CPU in it that it does support on the old one.

Registered 4 years agoJust been told that the BIOS has updated on the motherboard so I don't need to worry about it when I get it in the post tomorrow so it's all good. -

Good, its really annoying when you have it all seemingly set to go then you realise you have too pull the whole thing apart again (I'm looking at you I/O shield).

It's even worse with the BIOS updates for some people because they buy a new one not realising it needs to be updated and don't have any CPU to do it with.

Registered 15 years ago@TitanWarlord93 That's good news, I already had a x470 for those reasons but ended up with a gen 1 cpu in the end. -

Registered 16 years agoSomeone just bought my 1050Ti on ebay for £105. I bought it second hand on ebay a year ago for £130. No box manual, and clearly stated as 3rd hand on the auction.
Price of shit thesedays is ridiculous. -

Registered 4 years agoSo just installed my new motherboard with the Ryzen 2600. After a bit of fiddling around it was a successful upgrade. Just need to wait a while to get used to the new setup but should be good to go soon. -

Registered 13 years agoAfternoon all!
So I’m fixing a mates mums pc. It’s running Windows 10 on 2gb ram in single channel (DDR3 1600mhz Kingston 2gb stick 1.65v).
I’ve got a 2gb stick I can give her to double the ram but it’s a different make/speed/voltage (DDR3 1333mhz Unifosa? 1.5v).
I’m thinking it should work at the lower speed, but 4gb Dual Channel at 1333mhz has got to trump 2gb Single Channel at 1600mhz.
Just trying to up the speed of the machine without spending much money...
What say yee EG? -

Not sure on speed but surely 4GB is minimum for Windows thesedays so she’ll notice the difference when surfing over the 333lost MHz -

Registered 9 years agoIt's not just that though, mixing memory can cause stability issues. If you are adding it I would burn a memtest cd/usb to make sure it's stable before leaving it as it might cause more issues than it fixes. -
Mixing voltages doesn't sound like a good idea either. I don't think its possible to set separate voltages per stick. -

Registered 13 years agoCheers fellas, I’m feeling like I should try it atleast. From what I’ve read, admittedly in between cooking the family homemade pizza so the source might be a bit of the cuff, is that if I can set the motherboard to 1.5v on the memory it should just underclock the 1.65mhz, which it would be doing anyway to bring it down to 1333mhz due to the laws of pc hardware only running as fast as the slowest bit of kit. 😬 -

Registered 13 years agoAs frog says though. Stability is the big one. I don’t want to make it faster but much less stable. It runs like an absolute peice of shit at the moment but at least it runs. Sure I’ve got a memtest cd somewhere too. -

Registered 15 years agoTo be honest, and I know money is a thing, but nearly always, having enough RAM for the OS (whatever speed, except for performance enthusiasts) but primarily having an SSD will give the cheap performance (in terms of responsivity) gains that are most noticeable.
What is the current Hard drive size? -

Registered 13 years ago500gb. It’s a Western Digital so not the cheapest HD.
I’m goning to pass on some recommendations to the owner.
I just think ram would make the biggest difference currently as it’s constantly at 100% on and hd as I think it’s using it for the page file. -

From the SSD point of view, the gains of having a PC that is usable almost immediately, and all the programs start quickly are big ones to people who didn't realise that it was possible are pretty large. If the budget is there, it's really nice to have. -

Registered 13 years agoThe RAM works! So after installing the extra stick, it appears the mobo has automagically dropped the original stick to 667mhz(1333mhz). Looking at CPU-Z at these speeds with 1.5v the memory timings are identical on both sticks. Can't see an issue with running like that if its just a email/light internet PC.
Its running a lot smoother now obviously and is day and night compared to when i got it.
Next job is to fix Windows Update which appears to be broken on it... -

Registered 12 years agoSo does anyway want a gaming PC? Haven't even turned mine on in months and it is just taking up space. A couple of years old, but was a £2k pc back then, so should still be good for someone.
3XS I7 6700K
Overclocked 6GB EVGA GTX 980Ti
500GB SSD
16 Gig DDR4-2666
2TB Sata drive
Asus Z170 PRO GAMING Mobo
Creative A550 5:1 speakers
27 Acer K272HULA monitor
Will put on ebay, but thought someone here may want first. -

Just ordered a BenQ EW3270U to use with my PC and PS4 Pro. Currently have a wheezing GTX 970 in my tower at the moment and i'll be looking at a RTX 2070 sometime next month but i'm really looking forward to finally seeing some 4K content! Not sure i've ever seen anything in that res apart from the odd time when i've walked past a couple of sets whilst in Currys so i'm very much looking forward to the upgrade.
