I've heard good things about the Fuji Speedpoint F1? drives but that was last year so they'll either be a bargain or a newer faster one is out by now. I've got WD Blacks and they're nice. My Barracuda 7200.11 was one of the batch that brick themselves due to a firmware issue. It's all sorted now but it's worth checking forums for such things. Luckily i only lost a load of save files and i'll give the old SATA terminal fix a whirl at some point so it's not all bad |

Right, I'm gonna be naughty and use the credit card, these i3/i5s worth looking at or shall I stick the the Core 2 range? -
i5's are supposedly a bit expensive for what you get, so compare i3 & Core2 prices and mobo prices too. I've no idea what prices are like at the moment.
I'm assuming you're mostly gaming. -
Not modern games no, but the option to play the odd one would be nice (mass effect was my last purchase).
Any recommended retailers? -

Registered 18 years agoI used Easy PC for my custom build (with an i5, lol!). They have a web store and an eBay shop, not sure if the do mobo bundles or not though.
Edit: that they built for me, not that brave. -
I used to use Tekheads, Oveclock or ebay for odd stuff, and ebuyer etc for common bits. I couldn't honestly recommend a particular one now, it's been so long since I've built something. -
Think I'm just gonna go for this bundle, seems about right. -
Ended up buying an e8400 and ASUS P5QL PRO iP43, purely for overclocking when needed, £190.
Not sure if I should have gone for the Quad core really. -
I've heard that Battlefield Bad Company 2 is quite choppy on dual-cores and runs much better on quad-cores as that's the way it's been designed.
Could just be bullshit, I know. But......... IT COULD BE TRUE -

Possibly, but he's already said he'll mostly be playing old games. Dual core would have been fine, but hey-ho - it's hard to make a bad purchase on CPUs these days anyway.

You should of went for a quad core Phenom II (prob a 955BE).
You could of got one and a mobo for the same price as that bundle and it would totally annihilate it.
Nobody buys Phenom IIs anymore... -

It's for MAME. High clocks and single threaded performance seem to be the order of the day. It isn't a stupid purchase. If he gets a good overclock he'll be fine. Would have got a Ph2 myself too but for what is needed, its fine (bordering on ideal).
But apparently people are still buying e8400s
People are stupid. -

Well the fact that its a DDR2 based system means there isn't much upgrade patch anyway. Won't be upgrading for a very long time anyway.
Most software isn't really taking advantage of quad cores, and if you're not planning on playing new games with maxed out graphics it probably won't be a problem, but a quad core would have potentially future-proofed things for you a little bit.
System will mainly be used for media serving / Mame / SF4 and Left4Dead.
The e8400 is a really good overclocker, which was my main reason for buying it.
EDIT: AMD is for gayers. -
Not such a huge loss according to the Anand workbench:

You might be right about price though. -

Yup, but this'll be running at 3.6 out of the box with stock cooling no problem. Apparently.

Yeah, marginal improvement lol. I'm sure MAME/Dolphin/Left4Dead will give a fuck. -
e8400 will go to 4ghz no problem though, if I want it to.
EDIT: Cheapest I found the 955 is £122, prices seem to have gone up on certain things over the last few months. -
£129 for a E8400 is mental when you can get a i5 for £150. :/ -

I know, but I've only got £200 to spend, I'd need motherboard and ram to go with it.

You've not made a stupid purchase. I'm pretty sure that's a decent mobo too.

Yeah, I looked at a lot of reviews for that one. I've had a lot of experience with shit motherboards and wasn't gonna get bitten again
-
Still, it's nice to get lots of good advice - after you've bought. :/ -

Again, £200 is all I have.

But clock speeds don't really mean anything when you're on an old architecture.
An i5 750 only sits at 2.6 but still totally buries most 3.X Phenom II and C2D's. -

What motherboard do you have?
