okay, so we have this mac g4 (i think) at work. The person who usually uses it is on holiday and I need to get a file off it.

I barely know how to use a mac and don't even seem to be able to turn it on!

I press the power switch on the front which lights up as long as I hold it in, then as soon as i let go the light 'dies' and the machine doesnt' power up.

Am I doing something stupidly basic wrong? Or is the machine funged?

grrr, why can't everyone use PC's....

Yep, don't hold the button in.

    Press it once, quickly.

just so the microswitch engages. Then step away from the Mac.

    It should power on.

...and slooooooooowly walk to the coffee machine. Remember, don't rush. They can smell your fear. Relax. Breathe. Laugh in a non-threatening manner. Noooooooo, don't tilt back your head. Noooooooo, stop with the hands in pockets and swinging of singular leg in mock nonchalant way.

AND you're back to your desk. Job done. Deny everything. Shoot anyone that saw you touch the machine. Burn down the office just in case.

Then your work there is done.

Go home. Relax. You never saw me.

Um, it could be the machine was asleep rather than switched off. Try pressing the space bar, or clicking the mouse.

I used to have a G4 that had problems waking up (ie: it wouldn't), so you might have to do a reset by pressing the button with the triangle on it, below the power button.

Do not fear the Mac, it loves you more than your own mother.

Worse comes to worse, just keep holding down the button the front for quite a while... Then let go. And press again.

Otherwise, it could be asleep (as was said above) and may need just pressing spacebar.

    Or it could be broken?
