Anything to stop the cunting Japanese fishermen slaughtering them. It's quite horrible what they do to the poor things.

Pretty much. Although I don't suppose entomologists have the same issue with assassin bugs.

    Oh, and:
20 years ago the whale was implicated in the death of another trainer in Canada.

Did they find flipper prints on a piece of lead piping or were the 3" teeth marks a bit of a giveaway?

My grandparents used to live along Cardigan Bay in Wales. I once saw a beached Dolphin that had been shot in the face*. True story.

I think it had been shot… it didn’t look like it had been dead for very long, and it had a hole in its head. Maybe just harpooned.

    Lol

Ok, it had a few holes in its head. One more than it should have had :)

I couldn’t figure out why someone would have randomly killed it like that. Unless the hole happened another way…. The rest of the dolphin was intact without a scratch though.

Maybe the Welsh were getting bored of sheep….

Hmmm, Orcas in the wild risk getting beached to snatch sea lions from the shore. Maybe it was obeying a natural predatory instinct to snatch something from the edge of the water.

However, I seem to remember that the mother has to teach their young to do this in the first place, so maybe not.

Still, they shouldn't be kept in a zoo performing tricks.

They shut the dolphinarium down in Brighton, so they should do the same there.
(Although the Dolphins did sing happy birthday to me when i was about 5 years old)

I'd blanked the memory of going there as a child, I did got to the Sea Life centre that's there instead a few years ago.

It's good to see wild dolphins swimming off the coast of Brighton on the odd summer, not seen any for a few years but it happens from time to time.

This thread is repeated on 'News and Politics'
Why lock the thread on 'News and Politics' and keep it open on 'General Gaming'

    Should't it have been vise-versa ?

Personally I would just try and refrain from posting the title of this forum… “Killer whale goes NUTS and ASSAULTS trainer”!

I bet she had a “Whale” of a time.

Forum's not what it used to be, we should be knee deep in puns by now.

Because this thread predates the introduction of categories. Answer: recategorise. And you should use the proper classic view. ;p

I say good for the whale. These poor things are used to swimming in oceans and suddenly they're stuck in a tank the size of a bathroom, and that's where they're to stay for life. I'd be pissed, too!

You know his free mates are all: "Hey, everyon's going to hang out down by the sea lions for a bite. Wanna joi......ohhhhh yeah, you've got THAT whole thing going on."

In 1999 Daniel Dukes, an unauthorised visitor to the Florida park who entered after hours, was found naked and dead, draped over Tillikum’s body, after apparently jumping into the tank in his underwear.

McMonkeyPlc clearly has the same thought pattern as Daniel Dukes... Ha!

Keeping orcas and dolphins as captive circus freaks is abhorrent.

I've gone swimming and diving with the latter in the Pacific. I was even in the water with them as they hunted a school of fish. Seeing them in the wild drives home just how wrong it is to wrench them from their home, emprison them in the equivalent of a teacup, and have them perform in front of large crowds. As with dancing bears, this practice has no redeeming feature.

Unfortunately it's too late for many of them to return to the big blue, but I long to see the day where this barbaric practice is entirely eliminated. Every trainer death, however sad in itself, is further proof that cetacean captivity should end.

I really don't think you can compare Sea World to dancing bears.

True, dancing bears in India and Pakistan (or wherever) have it incomparably worse. At least dolphinariums are regulated and trainers usually like the animals they work with.
Still, a comparison can be made in how devoid of merit both practices are.

Dolphins and Whales have been shown to play in the wild and I don't really think what they do at parks like this is much different.

I was at Sea World once and they started the killer whale show but the whales weren't interested in performing so they just cleared out the stadium with an announcement that they don't force them to do anything and to try again at a later show.

As longs as the tanks are a decent size and the animals are not cruelly treated then I don't have a problem with it.

    Oceans > tanks

I think it's very sad that these animals are kept in tanks for our amusement. It's also very sad that people think it's okay to do this.
