There's a patch out. I know a lot of you have had problems with the game, hopefully this will fix them.

Hopefully someone will bring out a no-cd hack for this soon, I got used to not having to put the CD in when I wanted a few years of bashing the French. :-)

I got M:TW on a whim after hearing all the good reviews, but i have not played it since the day i got it. the tutorial is lame, the battles are very fidgity and the campaign screen is just confusing and restrictive.

do you think i should stick with it? or is it just not my 'thing'

You might want to try it's previous incarnation, the map was better structured and easier to get to grips with. I much prefer Shogun to Medicinal total war, the units are more interesting, although the computer may be stupider I thought the game was more fun.

I never really noticed that many problems with Total war that needed patching.

I would stick with it. There are a few niggles, but once you get into a campaign it is great and very involving.

No EU2 though (had to drop that in). :)

Tough it out - there's a good battle simulator with only a few niggles.
I have found I've given up on the Civ clone but can't stop playing the historical battles, watching the French run away is worth it every time.
