Registered 15 years agoEden Lake - whilst there is blood and gore in it, that's not the focus of the film and definitely not where the tension and fear comes from. Probably the scariest film I've ever seen in my life I think. Was shaking in the cinema, and I love a good scare

Registered 14 years agoYou could always have a look at some films from the Japanese director Takeshi Miike.
I think Audition is his only film which is an actual torture film. Oddly it is also his classiest film. (You should definitely avoid that one). I do warn you though even if his other films are not torture films they are not exactly comfortable to watch either.
Ichi the Killer is one of his best films and should be the best place to start. (If you can cope with the twistedness then try Gozu and Visitor Q). -

It does not deserve anywhere near the amount of praise it gets.
You would probably like a French film called Switchblade Romance which is a similar type of film which also reviewed well despite been little more than a rehash of far superior Asian films.
If you have not seen it yet watch A Tale of Two Sisters and then come and tell me that Them is not derivative shite with a contrived twist. -

I can see what you are saying and I will try to explain:
For me A Tale of Two Sisters is an intelligent psychological horror and Them was billed as an intelligent shock horror. Therefore I watched it with a few of my friends expecting to be blow away by a well structured plot.
I was expecting a version of Scream that was as smart as A Tale of Two Sisters and I got a version of Scream that was no more intelligent than the original but with all of the tempo removed. It was not what we were expecting and we all hated it. -

against all the odds midnight meat train isnt that bad, but it is kinda verging on torture horror.. v v violent at the least. -

Registered 13 years agoMay and Hard Candy are both worth a look. As someone else pointed out, The Mist is very good (especially if you get it on BD as it comes in both colour & B&W). Also, 30 days of Night is top class schlock too. -

Registered 15 years agofinally got round to watching the japanese version of the Grudge the other day - that scared the shit out of me more than any horror film i've seen in years, and theres very little blood in that.

Registered 16 years agoWell, the Them is not an intelligent movie. Itīs a very good thriller with an unexpected twist but itīs not a movie that requires different viewings to fully understand every detail.
I bet that if you had gone in with different expectations, you would probably would have enjoyed it more.
Oh, and i also fully support that Hard Candy recommendation. A great movie with an amazing perfomance by Ellen Page. -

Actually I've seen both films. Switch Blade Romance/High Tension is okay but it has lots of silly gross out moments and the twist is awful; I don't know how you could say the twist in Ils is contrived (even though it's based on a real story) but recommend Haute Tension.
A Tale of Two Sisters is a great film, but it's good only because it focuses on the characters. The actual horror elements are fairly uninspired and borrow quite liberally from Japanese horror. As LFMartins said, it really has nothing in common with Ils, so they shouldn't be compared.
Oh, and recommending Ichi the Killer? It's not really a horror or thriller, and has lots of gore - the complete opposite of what Tonka is looking for. -

Yeah, I quite enjoyed it, the creature effects are really fucking creepy and quite original.

Thereīs no ghost, it was all in the girlīs mind so of course that her vision of the ghost of her mother will be the same thatīs used by the Eastern culture. -

Well we agree about Switch Blade Romance. (Which I was suggesting to you not Tonka). For me the twist in Them was even worse than the Switch Blade Romance one. I thought they were as bad as each other. So I figured if you liked Them then you would like SBR. (I was wrong).
Although at least the twist in Them was actually possible unlike the SBR one. -

I think you give the film's creator's too much credit. Asian horror existed long before long dark-haired girls started crawling all over houses.
To be fair the horror in most of the film is quite decent, even if it's unoriginal. It's only the one scene with the mother crawling out of the wardrobe that's quite jarring. -

I do not think that scene was not in the version I watched? There was a bit where you think you someone under the kitchen sink but it was too fast to actually see anything. Or was it in the flash back section near the end when you find out the girl discovered her mum had hung herself in the wardrobe. -
