    @KnuttinAtoll

I moved into a house share in 2017 where this was going on next door. Twice a day, though the worst was dawn, so sometimes 4am. Asking my housemates about it, they said it'd had been going on for years - irritated them too - but they were too fucking English to mention anything. When I suggested I would do something about it they begged me not to and suggested I just get ear plugs. No way I was standing for it, not at 4am. So I politely knocked on the door and very kindly asked him to turn it down. Bingo. Nada ever again. My housemates were real numbnuts.

TLDR - Don't be so English about it. Ask them nicely to turn it down and they may very well do so.

Ha, my wife is Irish and always laughing at my awkward 'try and keep the peace' Englishness :)

and @FWB Yeah I'm definitely trying to avoid confrontation wherever I can, always been like that.

Though to be fair, from my time in IE I don't think the Irish are any better;)

Will hold out for a bit longer in the hope this is only a temporary thing. It's still borderline in terms of whether it justifies a complaint, more an irritation than outright noise pollution that gets in the way of sleeping. But having a polite word certainly is the most sensible approach (though the Christmas songs blaring approach is damn tempting at times).

Just all very odd that it changed so drastically but presumably he/she had some moment of enlightenment or something.

    Taking to neighbours is bullshit.

It either creates a weird argument that can potentially turn into a massive problem or at best it's simply a case of it stopping for a week or two before resuming.

I would give knocking on their door a 4% chance of success and a 60% chance of being awful and making things awkward.

    This.

We politely asked our neighbours to keep it down and it resulted in them shouting death threats through the wall.

Just go straight to the council, police, social services, environmental health etc.

The only time I've ever been around to a neighbours to tell them to turn it down, I had allowed my initial mild annoyance to turn into a burning, festering hatred thanks to the aforementioned English curse.

By the time I went round, I knocked and then blurted 'TURNTHEFUCKINGNOISEDOWN' out to the first person who answered the door.

She just very calmy said 'oh, ok. Fine. You should have said something earlier. And there's no need to swear'

'no, miss, sorry, miss, thanks, miss, sorry, miss'

    Absolutely mortified.

I once talked to a neighbor about how him having parties from 4am onwards the nights a week just wasn't on.

He almost started crying and said he had list control over all the partying.

Quiet for months, then one relapse. I went down in my PJs and we actually had a laugh about it and he kicked everyone out.

I'm 190cm but he was half a head taller. Never knew his name. Never talked to him outside these two occasions.

Intimidation is the best tactic if you happen to be bigger than the noisemaker. Worked when I lived in Wales and the neighbours played happy hardcore all hours.

I had no chance with the twenty stone six foot fucker currently making my life a misery.

Becoming friends with neighbours is a whole different can of worms though.

I invited everyone in my building round for coffee the first weekend when I moved to London and it immediately offered me massive respect as people were fearful of the clear axe murderer in number 49.

Some people turned up. Nobody knew each other

Everyone will know each other, leave their doors unlocked and have a street party every time a royal gets on the front page of the daily express, so there's no worries there.

His "job" must be so much more straightforward over there what with all the front doors being kept unlocked!

My brother and his missus did this when they moved into a new road just before one Christmas, they invited every household in the entire road around for drinks etc, literally everyone turned up! House was absolutely jammed, hilarious!

I'd need a carjack to keep his gut out of the way, but it's an idea.
