Thinking about buying one of the new 4G iPods; anyone here already got one?

iPod Lounge criticise the look & feel (but not the actual operation) of the new grey click wheel and I must say, I think I prefer the white 3G wheel.

    Any comments?

I got to have a brief play with the 4G iPod down Micro Anvika and quite nice. Think of the solid-state wheel on the 3G iPods, but the whole structure can tilt to select the buttons.

That's it. It keeps everything in one place and I found it OK. Saves you moving your thumb up to the line of buttons and also stops you touching the wrong button by mistake.

    I quite liked it.

I think it's human nature to criticise the newer iPods than the one you own, for instance, I think the 2G is BY FAR the best.

    ;-)

Heh, I was just about to post and ask if it was mainly 3G owners that were unhappy!

I *still* prefer the 1G moving wheel, although I've come to like the solid-state of the newer ones.

My 20gb engraved iPod should arrive any day now. \o/

Can you get replacement ear phones or ones that aren't white? It's just I feel you're asking to be mugged if the white earphones are on show?

    /shameless plug...

I've got a 5gb 1g - the one with the moving wheel. It's firewire only - but the battery is spanking, and it's rarely been used really. I've now got meself a 40gb 3g - so I'm open to offers for the 1g....

Do the replacement earphones specifically have to be made by Apple, or will any standard ones work?

Your sis isn't interested in a new car is she?

Or a new mobile phone? (X70, Panasonic GD87, Nokia 8310)

Wireless networking gear? (PC cards and router)

    A copy of Zelda:TWW?

    Worth a shot.

Having decided to go for the 4G 20GB, I'm now stuck trying to decide what to have engraved on it.

Currently I'm thinking either of the classic "So long, and thanks for all the fish..." or maybe "The sound of her wings..." and my email address.

First trick with the iPod is to dump the headphones, they really are quite stunningly tinny and shite.

The headphone socket goes on the remote (if you've opted for that model) so any standard headphones will do. Also, if you don't want to use the remote (which I don't, personally) you can still plug headphones directly into the iPod.

I've got a Sony set and they are much nicer. You get some bass and it's a world of difference.

Something worth considering for those of you will minidisc is the new Sony High Density player/recorders. A work collegue just got one they are the same size as non HD portables and have the usual long battery life but the disc capacity has been increased to 1GB - or so he says. Its backward compatible with old minidiscs and with new ATRAC codecs can squeeze 8 albums on the old 120MB discs.

    Hehe sorry Otto

I'll drop her a line. Never ever occurred to me to be honest... Only the thread here spurred me. I keep thinking 'i'll ebay it... soon...'

Is she happy with the ibook ? I've had to post a copy of Office off to her - forgot to bundle it. But I hope she likes !

If she's seriously interest, I can offer them at a special price. Seriously, I do want to get rid and I'm too lazy to advertise on ebay.

    Bargins, much cheapness!

I never understood the engraving thing when on the battery replacement site it mentions that you won't necessarily get your iPod back, but that it would just be the same model, refurbished.

I would recommend these for any iPod owner:

    Linky

I got them from an ebay seller, and they are great. You can unplug the ear phones wire half way down so that you can use the iPod remote.

Sound great once they are broken in (they also do them in black).

Not only can you, you should, not only to stop yourself getting mugged, but also because the sound quality of those white ones is really inferior.

Any will work. I used to use mine with my old Sony ones that I had with my walkman, even they were better than the Apple ones. Now I use a pair of Sennheiser PX200s, very nice.

Haven't heard a peep from her, so I'm thinking it must have arrived! I'll report back in due course. What's not to like, eh? I sent her the Missing Manual from Amazon so that should keep her going. Do e-mail her about the iPod though, she'd be delighted I reckon.

Oh and Mike - given all these other temptations I'm getting colin to wave in front of her nose, probably not. She'll get my dad to buy the router anyway I reckon... ;)
