    Winter tyres FFS.
Without wanting to rehash the argument from a year ago, a couple of days of snow a year doesn't make it worthwhile or cost effective. Same for a lot of the infrastructure necessary to keep everything running properly.
Itís not just for snow, it makes driving in cold temperatures (which the uk has every winter) much safer. It doesnít even cost more, you have 2 sets of tyres that last twice as long, just a small increase in fitting costs.
    Worth it IMO.

Plus, with weather patterns becoming less predictable , there could be much more snow from now on.

Not worth it anywhere south of Yorkshire. Debatable in much of Scotland, and unless you want to keep 4 tyres in your flat all year round you have to factor in storage costs also

I live an hour and change from Whistler, I don't have winter tires. When things get slippy I just effortlessly slot the Bundy mobile into its highest gear (3rd) like a true professional

Canadian law required you to fit a plough to the bull bars in winter though, right

I've been watching the Bundy documentary. Are you driving a VW Beetle PES?

There was at least 5mm outside my front door this morning.

Manned up and made it to work regardless.

We had 12cms overnight so the girls school is closed. Trying to decide what's the least hassle, VPNing into work or pretending I've got to look after her and spending the day with the family.

Surely telling the family you need to vpn into work, telling work you need to look after the family and playing games.

When was the last time you worked from home when everyone is in the house and you got enough privacy to even play a quick game of candy crush?

It only costs a little more and would significantly improve safety and reduce chaos.
Many places further South of Yorkshire have 4 months of temperatures below 7 degrees which is when winter tyres are effective.
I've no idea why the UK is so resistant to the idea.

Because the weather in the U.K. is so variable, thereís no consistent cold spell where itíll be worth putting winter tyres on. Sure, itís snowing here now - but next week itíll be 10c again, and winter tyres are worse in warm weather than typically fitted all seasons are in the winter

If I look at the statistics for temperature in parts of England, it's below 7 degrees for 4-5 months..

    e.g. Manchester/

    From November - 7, 5.1, 4.3, 4.7, 6.5 (5 months)
    Sheffield - 6.5, 4.6, 3.8, 3.8, 5.8
    Birmingham - 6.2, 4.3, 3.2, 3,3, 5.3

    Even London - 7.7, 5.6, 4.9, 5, 7.2

My dad lives in the peak district. Pretty much every year he gets snowed in for a week and cant escape his house.

He still drives a RWD sports car because 4x4s are boring as shit for the other 51 weeks a year.
  • Deleted user 1 February 2019 10:25:30
You don't need winter tyres for the 1mm of snow you get and the 1 or 2 weeks there's ice on the roads.

If they were cost effective and useful people would buy them, is your answer.

Was looking forward to not being able to go to work and hooning around in my mate's Unimog today. Maybe being helpful bastards to people who were stuck.
Alas the snow is shit and I'm at work.

Volvo XC90 behind it for scale.

Once more, they are not just for ice and snow, they're for better control and braking in COLD temperatures.
