Get the hell out of there and go somewhere a bit less flooded with tourists. Cesky Krumlov, Telc, somewhere nice like that. -

Registered 17 years agoNice veggie restaurant near the old square for when you're bored of pig and dumplings
Worth going just for the carpentry, as weird as that sounds. It's proper amazing quality. -

Well I would except this is my first anniversary present from Mrs Fletche and she may be a little offended if I suggested that, saying that we are there for 3 days so no reason we couldn't travel out for 1 of them, weather permitting. -
Alternatively if you want pig and dumplings, with lots of beer, the Strahov Monastery is nice. In fact, that side of the river (Mala Strana) is a lot prettier and less crowded especially after dark. -

Registered 17 years agoIgnore the elitist "off the beatn path" traveller crowd.
Just follow the crowds of tourists to find the best spots. That goes for landmarks, food, pubs, etc. -

Yeah, don't do what Salaman says if you want to enjoy it, believe me. You have never seen hordes like you see in Prague. -

Registered 17 years agoThis beer hall micro brewery is pretty awesome. If you like beer you can't go wrong here, it's close to where most stuff is but it's far enough away that it's not rammed full of tourists. The food is ok, but the beer is super good
Edit - can't link to google translate for some reason. Translate it your damn self
Go there! it's great -

It's been a few years since I went - but both times I went in January and it was pretty quiet. I can only assume a) It's got much busier since 2001 or B) The fact that it's -10 keeps most people to Summer month visits only ! -

Memories Of Prague: Anyone got any?
aged 11 (1982): The Customs people taking our car to pieces on the side of the road looking for "unwelcome items and material". Doing doing cartwheels in clogs in Wenceslas Square and complaining because the food is all weird and you can't even get cola. We are visiting some university friends of my Dad's and staying in their state-provided apartment. My Dad has taken me out onto the balcony and he is telling me that I am bloody well going to eat anything that gets put in front of me and say thank you for it because they are using up most of a month's food budget on feeding us for the week that our family of 5 is staying with them. Swimming out in the lakes. Watching the pleasure that eating a Mars Bar gave our hosts. Not really understanding what was going on.
Aged 29 (2000): going to find something to smoke with my ex's cousin who ran a record shop and put on raves in strange parts of Eastern Europe. Ending up in the backroom of some bar with a bunch of Russian gangsters who wanted to show me their guns and talk about films they liked while plying us with vodka. Wondering how it could be that Czech women can be so breathtakingly beautiful and being told it was because they hit 40 and turn into hags, like that optical illusion
Tips: Make sure you go to the Jewish quarter and learn the strange history and the legend of the Golem where it all grew. You won't regret it.
There are some very nice tearooms.
Be careful with the Absinthe. -

Registered 14 years agoYeah, was wondering about going in Feb and the crowds, don't mind the cold, in fact looking forward to wrapping up for the outside only to enter a tavern or something for a warming drink. -

Was there in March last year, midweek, not a public or school holiday, freezing bloody cold, and you could barely move on the Charles Bridge and the main square. It's been like that every time I've been there (four times between 1987 and 2009).

That was my main memory of the place: I've never been anywhere, before or since, where there were so many *incredibly* attractive women.
Edit cos I knobbed up the quoting. -

Registered 13 years agoWent there for a school trip 10 years ago, had an awful time there. Mostly walked and sat on benches smoking cheap cigarettes and complaining about the terrible bunch of people I was there with. So um yeah... -

Actually I might have meant: Vptrovie uzene

Memory 1: Stepping off the train
- get harassed by roma prostitutes
Memory 2: Leaving the train station
- random lady offers 4 bed penthouse next to the Radisson on Wencelas Square for the equivalent of 12 pounds per night.
- get harassed by roma prostitutes
Memory 3: Arrive at apartment
- get harassed by roma prostitutes
Memory 4: Go to pub
- pay 20p for a pint of Staropramen that 10 years later will cost €6.50 in Dawson Street in Dublin
- observe table dancers which have been brought in especially for 4 local businessmen who look like drug dealers
- get harassed by roma prostitutes
etc., etc.,
Perhaps it has changed now, but in the immediate post-Soviet years it was pretty seedy (circa 1994 or 1995 I think, it's a while back)
Oh yes, I forgot to add,
Memory 5: Go to second pub that serves Black Death Vodka
- note that everyone inside wears black
- be asked to leave as it's entirely populated by local drug dealers -

) The history and architecture is the main reason, well, the food & drink too (I like to sample the local wares), have only been to Gothenburg and Rome in Europe so hopefully this will kick-start a wave of European travel. -
My memories... one of them is walking past one of the Police Stations where in the doorway a young woman was helping an old man cook up heroin.
