We had it our Uni bar. Good times. Spent nearly as much playing that, as I did drinking. -

Registered 12 years agoAnyone else play Time soldiers? Pumped a hell of a lot of wedge into that as a nipper but when playing in mame can only seem to shoot on one diagonal.
Street Fighter 2: Rainbow addition was hilarious fun for a while as well. Pressing start to change character mid match.
World Heroes 1 & 2 saw a lot of cash from my group of mates, but seems unplayable now (the deathmatch and haircut matches were awesome!) -
Rygar. I'm not sure how many levels there, although it appears to be possible to feed the machine forever. I got beyond level 20.
Other games include: Green Beret, Outrun, and Kung Fu Master all of which I managed to complete.
I always remember watching someone complete the shoot'em up Nemesis. They were a total pro, not making a single wrong move. The mind boggles as to how much they must have feed the machine to get that good. I could never get beyond level 1. -

Rofl, same.
We had it in two of our uni bars. I'd finish hoarding the scoreboard in one machine and then go repeat the process at the other. God, i'm so sad. :< -

Registered 17 years agoWhen I was 12, my mum had a pub which had a Williams pinball machine. (Black Knight), so that swallowed quite a few coins.
When I was 14, she had a different pub with no pub games at all. I mostly spent the weekends there, so she had to work. If I got bored, I could sometimes visit the 2 pubs down the road with a pocket full of schrapnel.
One had Wonder Boy and one had Double Dragon II.
When I was 16, I joined a friend for a visit to his older, student brother. The main reason of his visit was to play Battle of Midway in a nearby bar. We both took lots of cash and hogged the machine for ages using up continues to get to the end. -

When the yearly fair came to town, I'd always be tempted to give it a go and I would always die within the first 30-60 seconds.
I stupidly kept trying though. -

Registered 11 years agoPacland. There was a jump at either the end of the first or start of the second level I could never clear. No one ever told me you could wiggle the stick in mid jump to extend it and make him float down. Because there was a wee ramp I always assumed a good run up would give you the speed. Nope. -

Registered 9 years agoFor me, I think I can roughly separate my arcade memories into 3 phases:
Age up to approx. 10 (2D era)
- Golden Axe
- Double Dragon
- Toki
- Mercs
- Final Fight
- The Simpsons
- Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles
- Super Thunderblade (local swimming pool had the deluxe cabinet version)
- Bad Dudes vs. Dragon Ninja
- Crude Buster (aka Two Crude Dudes)
- Street Fighter 2
- Lethal Enforcers
Age 10 - early teens (early 3D era)
- Virtua Racing
- Virtua Fighter
- Virtua Fighter 2
- Virtua Cop
- Virtua Cop 2
- Sega Rally
- Daytona USA
- Area 51 (despite being 2D)
Mid to late teens
- House of the Dead
- House of the Dead 2
- Sega Rally 2
- Daytona USA 2
- Lost World Jurassic Park
- Time Crisis 2
- Crisis Zone
Of course there are other games I remember playing but these would be the ones I sunk the most money into.
You can see a particular trend developed in my.teens towards light gun games. Mainly brought about by the fact that me and my Dad would play then together back then. Just through practice I ended up being pretty good at them generally. Was able to complete Virtua Cop 2, House of the Dead 1, Time Crisis 2, and Crisis Zone all on a single credit.
House of the Dead 1 and Crisis Zone are probably where I excelled most. On Crisis Zone I had the entire scoreboard for about 2 years until the arcade got rid of it. For House of the Dead I had an even longer run. The local theme park had it, and the scoreboard was made up of me and a single other person I never met. Sometimes he (or she I guess) had it, sometimes me, but in the end I got the top score and held it for well over 5 years until they got rid of the machine. Absolutely loved that game.
Incidentally, I also owned House of the Dead on Saturn. One thing I often read, or hear in YouTube reviews of the Saturn port, is that, despite the huge visual downgrade, the gameplay holds up. To the average Joe, I'm sure that's reasonable, but as someone who played it to death, that's not quite true. The visuals were rough, but passable and recognisably HotD. The gameplay with a light gun was broadly the same. However, the frame rate being so low (about 20fps I think) seriously impacted timing. It made some of the innocent saves almost impossible, and the final boss (magician) absolutely brutal. I could almost one credit the home version, but the Magician only has a tiny window of opportunity to hit him whilst doing his charge attacks. That window was shrunk even further at home making it far harder than it should have been. That said still completed it, and loved having the game at the home overall. -

Damn, forgot all about that game. No where near me had it, so it's not one I played much, but I've dabbled.
Of a similar note, I owned the PS2 version of the Sega/Nanco joint effort Vampire Night. Not the best light gun shooter I have to say, but still enjoyed it.

Some boxing game I can’t remember the name of. You had to hit pads with boxing gloves on while fighting a virtual opponent. The damage you did created funny faces to your opponent. -

Or the Konami Fighting Mania games, of which my arcade had one based on Fist of the North Star.
