What's wrong with your face? A nice (7x10 minute) post-mortem of all the things wrong with the film mixed in with some slight oddness & little bits of behind-the-scenes stuff. Only watched up to part 4 but I'm really enjoying it ![]() (Yet to get to the bit mentioned of Lucas having 'melt down' at a PM screening) |

Registered 16 years agoSaw that the other day, it's excellent.
The 1st two parts and the last part are the most insightful, the rest is a frame by frame disection of why the film makes no sense.
It pretty much proves that it is not a subjective matter - Phantom Menace is an abomination. -

I'm not a Star Wars fan at all, but the original trilogy is enjoyable fluff with groundbreaking effects while episodes 1-3 was a cinematic abortion for many reasons. They're three of the worst mainstream movies ever made. -
Saw it yesterday after it was linked in the YouTube thread. Loved it. Picked the film apart very well - a little chaotic at times but overall absolutely on the money and funny as fuck.
Lucas doesn't really melt-down though, don't get excited. He just sort of goes "I think I overdid it" and the editor goes "Yeah, there's too much going on but you can't take any of it out, SELF-PWNED you CRETIN!" and that's it.
The clip of Lucas passing judgement on special effect extravaganzas is by far the worst case of self-pwnage I've ever seen though. Someone should force him to watch that tiny segment of interview over and over and over and over again... -

Regardless of whether you're right to hate the originals (you're not, but meh), I don't understand how anyone in their right mind can find anything of any merit whatsoever in the new trilogy compared to the old trilogy. New trilogy is three of the most boring, tedious, empty wastes of 2hrs+ each ever committed to film. Absolutely unbelievably bad.

Registered 15 years agoYou see, this I don't get, Pear. How do you come to that conclusion? The level of acting is virtually identical in both trilogies. I'll grant you that the special effects were something special for 1977. Indeed, they are still something special today. But that is the only positive in the trilogy for me.
I sincerely believe that nostalgia has propelled those films to a platform they should not occupy. This might be incredibly controversial, but to me, The Last Starfighter should have had the level of success that Star Wars had. Better film in every respect.. Granted, the special effects were poor compared to Star Wars. But it was a better story. -
Look let's not get into a heated and pointless argument about whether the first 3 films were good. If you don't like them nothing anyone here will EVER say will cvhange your mind so let's not derail!
Comparing the two trilogies, though, the differences are vast. If you actually watch this 70 minute review of the Phantom Menace it will tell you everything that any of us would say about the differences between the two trilogies.
In summation: in the original films the story structure is vastly better, they're more focussed, characters are far more interesting and rounded, there's an actual hero to follow from start to end, it's engaging for kids (come on, the Phantom Menace starts with a fucking tax dispute)...
The new ones are literally all about the effects - less than a quarter of what's on screen is even real. At least the originals felt tangible and solid. -
Christ, I forgot how boring the new trilogy is, it really is the one dullest set of films this decade. -

The first film of the first trilogy was boring. But the other two were good fun. At least as much fun and spectacle as the much loved original trilogy. Seeing Yoda fight Count Dooku, was that not cool? The fight between Anakin and Obi-Wan? The fight between Yoda and the Emperor? The death of all the Jedis? The killing of the younglings? The death of Jango Fett.
To my mind, just as good/bad as the original trilogy.
Edit: Just seen MrEd's request not to derail this thread. Not a problem. -

Registered 17 years agoI don't agree about the acting, it's not particularly good in the originals but is nowhere near as hilariously awful as the three new movies. Like I said, I'm not a Star Wars fan so nostalgia doesn't come into it, but Ed summarised why the originals are superior. It's simple, cheesy fun. The new movies are just mind numbingly terrible in every way. -

Nah, all of those things you mentioned may have been good if they hadn't been turned into effects spectacles. Seriously, take the time to watch the review or you can't really join in with this discussion - he makes all these points very well with actual video evidence and if you still disagree afterwards (which you will, you clearly don't like Star Wars, which is your right) well fair enough.
I personally rank the new trilogy in order of preference, 3, 2, 1. But 2 and 1 I really would never ever watch again if I had my way, and I'd only watch 3 if I absolutely had to. It's at least an hour too long for what actually happens. By the time you get to the end you're almost as bored as if you'd been watching the other two. There are nice moments (Anakin going nuts, the Kenobi/Anakin fight) but they're submerged in effects and grandour that dilutes their dramatic effect to practically zero. -

Also, yeah, the Yoda fight was awful. Should never have been shown.
