Odd how people focus on things like SotC and HL2, when things like MW2, Halo 3 and Gears of War 2 are in the top ten.
Didn't you know? Criticising universally acclaimed games is very cool and manly, while doing the same to genuinely mediocre or even shit games makes your testicles shrink.

As for any of the Halo games making the top 50, what a pile of poop. None of them are that great. It really is a case of an over-hyped game with a very poor single player campaign and a very mediocre multiplayer.

Wow. I mean you're entitled to your opinion and all but I thought it was universally recognised that above all else the Halo games had and have a fantastic MP component to them.

And at the time, the first half of Halo 1 SP was sublime and fairly revolutionary.

If I were to put up a list of top, 100 games of this decade, I'd show a lot more respect to PC games like Baldur's Gate II, Diablo II, Mount & Blade, Space Rangers II, King of Mountain Pass, Dwarf Fortress, The Longest Journey, Knytt, The Spirit Engine, Rise of Nations, Painkiller, Freedom Force, Guild Wars, one of the Anno games, Trackmania, Gothic 2, Risen, Dominions II, Titan Quest, Half-Life 2, Sins of a Solar Empire, Civilization IV and Machinarium.

This is why lists are shit, why are they needed? so you can go 'woo, my favourite game is high on the list', 'wahhh my favourite game isn't high enough' or 'wahhh this game is too high on the list'?

Clicked on the first page and thought "bollocks". Bollocks list. Don't care about the top 10, they're all blatently open to opinion or whatever.

But Wii Sports opened the door to gaming for a huuuuuuge audience. For ages and ages and ages it was the only good game on the Wii. In my opinion it deserves a place higher than fricking 99.

For the record I don't like what Nintendo have become, think Twilight Princess is shit and stale and that Mario Galaxy is unbelievably over rated, but credit where credit is due for Wii Sports, I mean come on! It was a fricking revolution.

I would agree with that entirely.

It wasn't really much of a game, though, so it doesn't belong any higher.

Not really, as far as I'm concerned it was not much more than a tech demo. Sure, it was revolutionary, and plenty of gamers have played and enjoyed it over the years, but would I, purely as a game, rate it higher than Mario Galaxy or Twilight Princess? No way. But that's just my opinion.

Personally I'd say that about The Sims as well, as shit as it was it was pretty important.

That's a better argument. I wont get into whether it's better or worse than tp and mg. But i do think it warrants a far higher position than 99 on that list. Sure it didn't have a story and spurned the hell that is every minigame compilation on the wii ever. But for me it was one of the few 'fuck me, this is amazing' experiences that every so often gaming provides. Sure it has issues and wont play as well in years to come, but it was and is a milestone in my eyes.

The beginning of the game? Half-Life 2 is head and shoulders above both.

But the article is not about top 100 gaming 'milestones', or even revolutionary experiences. If it was then I agree that Wii Sports would have certainly deserved to place in the top ten at the very least.

No trolling, Metroid Prime should be top 10, Halol 3 is a great game but not quite *that* good and HL2 is boring, that endless and dull river section killed it for me..

I'd say that all half-life and halo games are far better than Metroid Prime in every way.

But as someone already said, it always comes down to opinions which makes the whole arguing over lists thing pointless.

I told you before ecosse, although the middle section of HL2 does drag it picks up rather awesomely after that. One of the my favourite games of the decade, but I'd rate it lower than the original, as well as Metroid Prime.
  • Deleted user 30 December 2009 19:30:24
Jesus, the river section isn't even halfway. It's about an hour or so in. ecosse probably hasn't even seen the grav gun.

HL2 is quite a unique game in how it evolves and changes as you play through. Most FPS games just make you do the same thing in a variety of settings, but the gameplay elements in HL2 constantly change, so even if you do find a bit boring, you're not too far away from something completely different.

I don't think HL2 is as good as HL1, but apart from that it's my favourite FPS, and certaintly deserves a place in the top ten games of the last decade. I'd probably have it in my top ten ever.
  • Deleted user 30 December 2009 19:32:52
HL2 is awesome just for the way the story is told.

    Wait what?

You'd consider halo to be better than Metroid Prime?

Is Transformers your favourite film of the noughties as well?

You're on crack and I want some of it

I remember getting an Xbox for this game and just feeling really disapointed. I was really impressed with the graphics and the scale of it all, but nothing else really stood out I don't think. It got quite tedious once I noticed that huge chunks of the game were being used over and over again. I got more fun out of Unreal Championship to be honest, and that wasn't amazingly popular.
  • Deleted user 31 December 2009 01:22:25
Even if you didn't like it/them, the Halo games are still extremely well made.
  • Deleted user 31 December 2009 02:46:13
I don't know. I wasn't a fan of the floaty physics, the first game rehashed entire areas to extend the games length and the single player in the second game is horrible. However, I can see why people enjoy the multiplayer.

As for Metroid Prime Vs Halo debate, the first Metroid Prime is one of the greatest games of all-time, even though it was practically Super Metroid in 3D. It may lack multiplayer, but thats not what metroid games are about. It's the campaign mode, which is one of the best in an FPS i've ever played. The second Metroid Prime is quite a bore through...
