Basically I'm looking for a decent, sturdy, small camera that'll take good photos at night or in low light situations. Ideally one that doesn't require a flash to take a decent image as there is nothing I hate more in photography that a flash. Ideas? |
Point-and-Shoot for low-light, night and event/arena

Canon S90 has an F2 lens, which I think is about as good as you'll get on a compact. -
Just reading up on the Lumix LX3 and GF1 which have some very favourable reviews though the GF1 is starting to go up in size and price. -
Lumix LX3 is brilliant, although I would get the Canon S9 above it as it has a faster lens and better direct controls. I've used the LX3 a fair bit, and while the lens is lovely, I don't find the thing very intuitive to use.
GF-1 isn't really a point and shoot, it's more a small DSLR. Personally I think it's a bit 'jack of all trades' but I know people rate it very highly. -

Faster how (they both go to f2)? -
Oh, I thought it was 2.8.
Fair enough. -

It depends ho you define "decent", but IMO at night it's not really possible to get decent photos even with DSLR without flash. If you are taking indoor photos with DSLR (or compact with external flash) you can reflect it of ceiling, not really as good as without flash but million times better than using direct flash, sometimes you cannot even tell that flash has been used.

Anyway, canon and panasonic are good. -
