    This.

As for the thread title, who will be the first to actually have one on here eh?

    I'm after a UK 32gb 3G so it certainly won't be me!
3G and WiFi are released on the same day over here.

Is anyone going to the expense of getting one sent to them from America even though they'd only have to wait a few extra days to get a proper UK one and probably spend slightly less as well?

turns out my mate is going to NYC next week, he's gonna try and pick up a couple and i'm first in line! thing is, i believe they are sold out so wont get one IMO.

I want one, but a couple of things are putting me off. Firstly, it's just an upscaled ipod/iphone. I've read a couple of reviews and I'm not liking the lack multi-tasking, so there is no program switching? So if you're in one thing then that's it? You cannot have multiple apps running, like for example quite a simple one, say the internet explorer and msn app running at the same time? I'm not liking how the original iphone apps show in a window the size of the original screen they were designed for, these can be upscaled, but pixelation occurs. Look I can see the advantages of the ipad running on the same or similar software as iphone, but this is a computer, not a phone or ipod and it can't do simple tasks like multitasking and I'm not happy about the big blank spaces on the internet where flash is used as it doesn't support flash, because both companies hate eachother.

    I still want one.

We might just as well go back to using Amstrad CPC 464s ffs.

Let's not go mental. It would just be nice to have msn on and browse the net. You're either chatting or you're not. If someone sends you a message, there is no pop-up, you'd have to quit the browse app and open the msn app to check for new messages. This was just my example of simple multi-tasking which it can't do.

Yeah, fair enough. I wasn't having a go at the device. As I say I really want one. Just wish it could do abit more.

Edit: Interesting point. If you already have an iphone app and the developer releases the higher res ipad release or update, is that free or do you buy it again?

I mentioned previously, some of my apps (Solitaire, MGS Touch) have had recent free updates to optimize the graphics for the iPad. So I guess not.

    @blizeH

I was hoping, software-wise, for something which was a mac-lite and a bit more robust... rather than a dual copy of the limited iphone software. I mean, great for what it does on a phone or ipod. But this needs to be my replacement for computing and internet browsing. Right now, I'll wait for a latter version, when Apple have had a rethink or even better a re-design.

I think if they had included flash (Leaving this out still, I think is insane) multi-tasking and thrown in a webcam on the thing I'd be falling over myself to get one...

It looks lovely, but I don't think I'm asking for much to want to browse gametrailers while speaking to friends on msn? Let me know when this becomes reality on ipad and I'll be intrested. I really do think Apple are underestimating the backlash from the average Joe by supporting flash!

I'm not big on the whole apps scene. I like itunes for music and podcasts. It will only be a matter of time before a very similar device running a version of Windows which can multitask, run itunes and more appears on the market.

I think most complaints come from not understanding what Apple want to do here. They don't seem to want to create a fully functioning computer, so all the complaints about how it doesn't do what a fully functioning computer does are like me complaining that a Mini doesn't carry the same number of people as, well, a people-carrier. It's not that machine. I understand you want that machine but this really isn't it. It's a net-book-lite, with a load of stuff deliberately removed so that the very basic stuff can really shine.

I know it's frustrating to people that expected (for some reason) or just plain hoped for (like me) Mobile Snow Leopard, but I think that's going to take a looong time to come, because just as nobody else out there has managed, Apple haven't been able to make a desktop-originated operating system work on a touch-based tablet - or if they have, not to their standards I guess.

Multi-tasking is something I do occasionally miss insofar as I'd like a quicker way to dip into email than by completely quitting whatever I'm doing, launch Mail, read and reply, quit Mail, launch other app again. Apple appear to be about to embrace that sort of quick flip multi-tasking with OS 4 which is going to arrive this June or July, probably at the same time as the new iPhone arrives. Nobody knows how, but leaks suggest it's going to be basic and polished. I don't think it will allow you to have a messaging window open on top of whatever you're doing, because this isn't a window-based operating system, but I do think it will make it very simple to switch between 'active' apps without going through the Home Screen. Possibly like switching between open pages (or tabs) in Mobile Safari for iPhone, I reckon.

And as for Flash, I can see both sides. I can see the arguments for battery life and for processor hogging and for encouraging open standards for media presentation as opposed to Adobe's software, but I can also see that Jobs has probably got a bee in his bonnet about someone at Adobe too. He can be pretty petulant like that. But I honestly won't miss it that much. Haven't on the iPhone. I think in America where you've got Netflix or Hulu it's a bigger issue but most videos I get linked to are on Youtube, where video plays just fine. On the other hand, the iPad is going to encourage visiting far more of the web than I would on the small screen of the iPhone, and that means I'm going to get the blue Lego far more often. I don't think Apple will ever back down on this, not now they've encouraged some major players to start converting to HTML5.

Other than that, I tend to believe those that have said you have to use it before you understand it and that using it elevates it beyond "just a big iPod touch", which as a slur is getting really boring to read even though that's exactly what I thought of it when I saw the unveiling, which left me a bit cold.

And it's totally not for everybody, at all. I'm going to get one because I've luckily got just enough cash spare that I'm saving for it, and I know I'm going to love playing with one.

BTW it is incredibly easy to get multitasking and flash on your iphone, obviously i know people shouldnt have to do this, but if thats the only things stopping you getting an ipad i'm sure the geeks will be jailbreaking it very soon

It's already been jailbroken! I don't have the link to hand but it was busted a couple of hours ago. They're waiting for Apple to put out the first point release on the software before tweaking and releasing it to users.

    EDIT: Here it is

I've just looked on eBay and can see loads already up and selling well. Very tempted to bid but partner says wait until we move house then I can get one as a moving in present for myself! Better move quick then since it will soon pre-order time.

I think people for the most part do understand the idea behind the ipad, I just think people can't help but see that Apple have limited the features to a point where even trying trying to describe ipad as a netbook lite seems overly kind.

I'm not trying to be an ass, because to be honest I can't help but want one of these myself. In all seriousness though, what would be the difference between and ipad and a iPod touch of the same size?

Baring in mind that Apple are known for there inovation with new products. I think the issue people have above anything, is that the ipad is just so underwelming. People were expecting some kind of tablet device that in a similar way to the iPhone would have Apples rivals scratching there heads and taking years to come up with anything even close to beating it. What they got, was a was effectively an iPod touch XL it doesn't matter how you look at it.

We shouldn't have to wait with baited breath as to when the thing has been jailbroke, just so we can try and get it to do things we really want it to do on it.

...All that said, I still want one :(

A big reason I tend to default to my iPhone is that it's just there, stable and ready.
No boot up, no slow down. I'm not sure if that alone makes the iPad worthwile but there are advantages to each app being able to claim the full power of the device, and it might just make your iPad the one computer you won't have to reboot more than once a year.
So, no multi tasking = give and take. Though running spotify while gaming on it would be nice.

Not quite sure what a laptop has to do with the ipad. The iPad has a market, a bloody big one. This is for people who do not need a computer, just need to be able to browse the internet, with the option of a million (or at least a couple thousand) different apps and extras such as basic document/database/powerpoint creating. I.e. most people in the developed world! It takes a special level of delusional self importance to fail to see how the features of the ipad are more than enough for most people, and - shock horror - some people are willing to pay a premium on superior design and intuitiveness.
  • Deleted user 4 April 2010 22:40:01
I get that. I just don't understand why people with computers want this as they clearly do.
  • Deleted user 4 April 2010 22:44:18
Oh that's just gadget lust. God knows I want one but no I do not need it in any shape or form. But I still desperately want one. An all purpose gadget that satisfies 99% of the requirements of your average person. If I only had a desktop I would definitely pick this up over a laptop - as it would make perfect sense for casual browsing and playing about without having to be sat at a desk. As it stands I have a laptop so that excuse doesn't work for me! :(

Like I've said all along - I don't think until you've had one for a couple of weeks that this will become clear.

One thing for me is that I'm pretty sure it's the only device that will make me ditch glossy mags. I know many think its just a big Touch or iPhone, but I think the size will make the hands-on experience something else completely.

    I can't fucking wait personally.
