You still can't play the disc version on the game pad though, right? That was the reason I never bothered to play it on my Wii U.
I don't think so, I think that just behaves like any other Wii game.

Cheers, I thought so. I'd play it on that rather than Dolphin if I could - I'm starting to get a bit of slowdown, so will probably have to tweak a few things anyway.

Ideally, a Switch port would be best :)

Ooh, I passed 18,000 posts. I should get out more.

You could play it with an original Wii Pro controller, although a bit annoying since it has to plug into a Wiimote rather than the console. Or you could just buy the eshop version on wii U. IIRC its only £18 or so.

I do have that pad - it came with Xenoblade in fact :)

Honestly, if the eshop version was a tenner, tops, I'd buy it to play it on the game pad. £18 feels a little too high though.

Saying that, I should be able to port my save file across from Dolphin. Something to consider...

You can get a code from ShopTo for the Wii U for £13.85 but it does say you need a Wii Remote and Nunchuck.

    https://www.shopto.net/video-games/nintendodigital/NDO2373666-wii-u-ddc-wii-xenoblade-chronicles

So I'm unsure whether I could play this with the Wii U gamepad.

You definitely can, I have the eshop version of the game and it asks you if you want to use the pad when you load the game.

Either thats just a generic warning on all Wii games as in most cases its true or the pad support was added after the initial launch on the eshop and the description never changed.

Edit: It has the gamepad listed as compatible on the Nintendo's website here

I accidently linked to US site but its the same.

Ah I see. Probably a generic warning on all Wii games for the Wii U.

At that price it's a steal, now I just have to hook my Wii U up again!

My PC has been acting up recently, so I've shelved it. I've been thinking about just hooking up the Wii U and buying the eShop version so that I can play it on the Gamepad, but I'm not all that excited to ditch ~30 hours of progress.

Ah, that's a pity. 30 hours is nothing in this game though, you'd soon catch up again now you know what you're doing.
