Nearly missed a crucial presentation this morning thanks to the alarm on this Desire cunt.
Anyone got to grips with it? Seemed to work fine last week, but two seperate ones failed to go off this morning. I really hope it's not one of those that doesn't have the alarm when you have it set to vibrate mode or some shit.
Have you got 'alarm in silent mode' checked under alarms>settings?
You can also set your alarm volume here too.
It's also worth setting the alarm itself to vibrate too.
edit: just to add I set my phone to silent each night when I go to bed. I've never had an alarm fail to go off in around 3 weeks of use. -

Registered 15 years agoGet Alarm Klock. It has a feature that increases the alarm sound from 0% to 100% over a specified time period.
I also had the muted alarm issue with the standard alarm but never had a problem with Alarm Klock...and no, I didnt write the app

Registered 20 years agoAndroid (taking the OS as a whole) is the first phone I've had which wouldn't wake itself up from being turn off, to sound an alarm. I did miss an important meeting meeting because of that. -
It was working just fine last week, and I changed nothing in the settings. Just didn't work this week.
It’s not a massive deal, but my last phone was AMAZING as an alarm. No matter how dead the battery was or what mode it was on, it would always always always go off, as if its existence depended on waking me up.
If this one’s not like that then fine, I’ll buy an alarm clock, no big deal. I can’t be dealing with the anxiety of not being certain, and I never will be now with the Desire after this morning and what others have said on here.
Like I say though, no biggie. Still a great phone. Just a shit alarm clock

Thankfully I'm not that heavy a sleeper to need it, but if you are it does have the advantage that you can install your own alarm apps on it. For example, there is one that only shuts up if you solve some mathematical equations, to make sure you are really up and not just reflexively turning the alarm off and going straight back to sleep.
Cheers for the warning though, I'll set myself another alarm on something else when I have something critical to wake up for. -

Not sure whether I understand your question correctly but Barcode Scanner can be downloaded directly as an APK. However, it could be also possible that the Orange app will trap all calls using the market:// protocol. -

Registered 18 years agoCheers, i'll give that a whirl and see how it goes. I'm this ' ' close to goldcarding and flashing the Rom to a vanilla 2.1 to get rid of this Orange lockdown crap mainly because all their apps use 3G rather than wifi. Get stuffed Orange. -

Registered 14 years agoVodafone Desire's are quite clean Mike. The only thing that came loaded on mine was the network settings. They didn't even put a splash screen on the boot up.
Is nice.
Also if you want a completely unbranded experience I see they now have the Nexus One up for pre-order with a date of the 30th... Free handset @ £35 per month (24 months). -

Registered 14 years agoCheers mate, thats good news.
They just arrived in my local Vodafone store this morning out of the blue (I was in there yesterday and they told me they definitely weren't getting them today!). Picking it up on the way home assuming I can gather all of the 1000 necessary documents required to create a new Bill Pay account.
Edit: Oh and if the Nexus is only arriving with you guys in the UK on the 30th, I'd say it will be the end of May before we get it. I prefer the Desire overall anyway. -

Registered 18 years agoNot sure if this has been mentioned already but there is now a way to add Google Talk to an Orange branded Desire -
[link]

[/link]
However, bare in mind that in the Orange T&C's it does say -
Mobile Internet - up to 500MB anytime mobile internet browsing. Usage above 500MB will be charged at the rates set out in the Price Guide - see orange.co.uk/paymonthlyguide. Not to be used for other activities (e.g.using your handset as a modem, non-Orange internet based streaming services, voice or video over the internet, instant messaging, peer to peer file sharing, non-Orange internet based video). Should such use be detected notice may be given and Network protection controls applied to all services which Orange does not believe constitutes mobile browsing. This may result in reduced speed of transmission, suspension of data browsing services and/or suspension of your account. For use in the UK only.
Which suggests that if Orange detects the instant messaging aspect of Google Talk then you may have problems...
Aaaaaggggh, in such a quandry! Really love the sound of the Desire but I keep finding more issues with an Orange branded one...Need to make my mind up by Thursday. -

Registered 18 years agoI thought the point of putting g-talk on was so you could use a wifi connection rather than forced to 3G like the Orange apps do?
It's why i want to put a different browser on mine. Why use my data allowance when i can get a decent wifi connection? Oh, yeah. Money.
edit: Wrong!
but kind of right .gif)
@Ken I don’t think thats the case, as they have left the GTalk app on other android phones, notably the HTC Desire. I think the real reason was to push the use of its own messenger application, that is charged separately from normal data. Its extremely cheeky and kind of lowers the respect I did have for Orange.
Their app is charged sperately to your data allowance? -

Jells, from the link -
So, as those of you you have had an Android device before know, Google Talk is an integral part of the Android operating system. So much so that the Market App will not even work without it! Its akin to your Messages app, it simply should be present.
So those of you on Orange may be more than a little surprised to see that Orange have actually removed the Google Talk application from their HTC Desire Firmware!! I didn't believe it myself to begin with either. What they actually did was remove the front of the app, but keep the GTalk service running in the background, as like I mentioned before this service is required to be able to download apps from the market!
I read that to mean that you can't d/l apps from the Market App without GTalk. Saying that I don't have the phone (yet) so I've never actually used one. Have you had first hand problems getting apps from the Market App? -

That sounds awesome! What is the name of that alarm app? I'm one of these cunts that wake up 30 mins before my alarms goes off, every.effing.morning. I'm highly competitive... so htough I wouldn't need such an alarm, I would very much like to see it for it's novelty value.

Registered 18 years agoThe Orange market app uses 3G and seemed to have a tiny selection of apps. I did install GTalk but haven't actually used it yet. I'm going to try adding a QRCode reader tonight so i can install apps by scanning the barcode rather than relying on their Marketplace. At least i hope their marketplace app keeps it's nose out anyway

That's how I read it but the market should still work as they've kept the service running in the background. It's stupid, although I can understand (but not agree with) their reasons. -

Liberating isn't it? You don't have to use any service that HTC provides to install stuff n your phone.
Radical concept, I know.
