November 17 Security Update is available for Moto G5 on the retgb channel. I had to check for it. No notification that an update was available. The complaining paid off.

Cool. I did a check this morning and there was nothing, so this is a pleasant surprise (and well overdue).

Only knew because of the post on here, hopefully its a sign they are not giving up on moto g5 owners. I think it fixes the bluetooth exploit, maybe the krack one. Well overdue date

Hopefully it will put anyone off buying a Moto G phone, rumour is the G6 will get oreo first when its out in late March/early april. G5(+) and the G%S(+) are not important as its going to be way after for that

Thinking about my next phone. I want the Google Pixel 2, but it is a tad pricey. Nokia 8 will hit the spot as well. Or there is the OnePlus 5T. Unsure of where to go. Any input welcome. (iPhones are not being considered)

What do you gents think of that choice?

Depends what's important to you. If you want a great camera then pixel 2, if it's mainly for consuming media/browsing then the oneplus unless watching 4k on a tiny screen is important to you.

And the Nokia 8 doesn't even warrant a mention by you? :)

Personally speaking, I have been going over the pros and cons and I realise that the Pixel 2 has a camera that is head and shoulders over the others, but I am just a normal consumer. Using my images to be shared, compressed, via social media and What'sApp. Not sure if the £150 premium over the Nokia 8 makes that worthwhile. I am trying to find a decent review for the Nokia 8, but can't really find one. Personally speaking, I am leaning towards that. It has fast charging, a 3,080mAh battery and also Android Oreo. And it is the cheapest of the three options.

Seems to be getting decent reviews, you just don't really see Nokias out in the wild much anymore :)

The Pixel 2 XL is great and I think the non-XL has the same guts, it's just a bit smaller and uglier. But yeah, it's not cheap.

I've got the pixel and whilst I think it's a great phone I'd happily switch to a Nokia 8 the 8 pro or N9 when it's upgrade time in 9 months, or whatever the best deal is at the time. I've had a play with the Nokia 8 and I really like the build quality. I've always liked Nokia handsets in this regard anyway.

Looks like my mind has been made up. As awesome as the OnePlus 5T is, I prefer the look of the Nokia 8. And the Pixel 2 seems brilliant, but £550 is still £550 and the Nokia 8 is only £399. And as I said, I am cheap.

I like that thought. And the price. My last three phones were bought directly from the Motorola site. Does the Moto Z Play 2 come with Oreo, @Tonka ?

    @Vice.Destroyer no idea.

The 2 should get it at least. I have the first one and it's rumored to get out someone soon. It depends on which update channel you're in.

I think it's been discussed in this thread.

@Vice.Destroyer you prob know this already but a bunch of new phones are being announced in the next week, many will be flagships so probably pricier than you're looking for but there will likely be some in your price range too, so might be worth waiting.

@Stranded87 You're talking about the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona? Yes, it is on my radar and I will be looking out for the new flagship phones. Especially interested what the Samsung Galaxy 9 will bring to the table. But I am just too stingy to go for flagship phones now, since they are in the £800+ range. I am sure they are fantastic, but it is still a lot of money. But yes, I'll look out for the phones and there just might be a price drop of some kind for existing phones.

As it stands, to sway me from the Nokia 8, a phone will have to come out that has a bigger battery, equivalent or better specs and a comparable price point to steer me to them. Let's see what happens.

I really really don't want to tempt fate (touch wood), but 8 months on after my OnePlus 5 purchase, I'm still really happy with it.

I'm not surprised. It is a fantastically specced phone. And that is part of my reticence for spending an insane amount of money on a mobile. All I want my phone to do well could be done more than adequately on a £250 phone. Going for a £400 phone is already an extravagance in my eyes. And going even higher is crazy to me. (But let me not take away the joy others get from their phones. Your cash, your business. I'm only speaking for myself)

What's your current phone? A benefit of never going all out speccswise is that I don't know what I'm missing out on. I assume a top of the line phone is faster and smoother than mine. But I've never felt that it's slow.

I will continue to get last years top of the midrange every second or third year.

Then again, once Google get their thumb out of their asses and start releasing the Pixel in Sweden I will be very tempted...

I currently have a Moto X Play. And the need for a new phone is exacerbated by the horrible, horrible crack on my screen. I have seen the Moto X4 for £250!!! Which is a fantastic price, when you consider that even the Moto site has it for about £370!

But yes, right now, I am thinking Nokia 8, then Pixel 2, then OnePlus 5T, then whatever else.

I always go top-end because I live on my phone and I'm paid to write about phones, but with the rising prices I'm just not sure I can justify that any more. Plus, I tend to value battery more than anything and the top-end ones often aren't the best for that. No idea what I'm going to buy next though.

You're right! It's even worse, my wife works at Sony Mobile.

Don't buy the Nokia! It's obviously shit!

@Stranded87 HAve you got a shortlist though? And are you one of those lucky creatures that gets sent phones for gratis?

@Vice.Destroyer I sometimes get sent them to review etc, but usually only get to keep them for a week at most and don't have a constant stream of them, so I still need a phone of my own. But it is nice sometimes being able to test a phone before I decide if I want to buy it.

And I don't really have a shortlist no. If any of the upcoming flagships are at slightly more reasonable prices (I'm thinking mainly the Huawei P20 might be) then that could be worth a look, and the OnePlus 6 could be tempting if I can wait that long.

I'm not overly sold on any of the phones that are already out, but mostly because I just like getting phones when they're new - even if in this case it might not be a top-end one, so we'll see what MWC brings.

@FWB glad you are. I'm not completely enthused. Ive have issues with it freezing sometimes for no reason, Bluetooth audio stuttering, wifi/mobile data ceasing to work until I restart, camera refusing to open, and some other small bits.

I haven't had a Samsung since the Note 1, but I'm likely to go in that direction when I get a new phone. Or perhaps the Razor phone. Google Nexus was my mainstay for years, I'm not happy with the direction they went with the Pixel lineup so I abandoned them.
