Registered 15 years ago@RedPanda87 Thanks, that's more like it! To be honest the only thing that's really putting me off is the sheer length of it. I've got a Razer phone now and I was kind of thinking about getting a smaller phone next time. But the specs are winning me over. -

Registered 4 years agoCurrently hovering over the order button for a Honor 20 Pro. I've got a terrible feeling about it because in some ways it's a downgrade from my LG V30 (lower res screen, hole in the screen, IPS instead of OLED), but LG's lackadaisical approach to updates has given a taster of what a world without security updates will be like when Trump's huawei ban truly kicks in.
Should I bite the bullet? -

That was my point. On my current phone LG have been so shite with updates that I'm fully steeled for Huawei being shite with updates when their current access to Google for existing devices is revoked.

Registered 4 years agoI kinda wanted something with a decent camera, and something I could get as an O2 upgrade phone with a budget of ~£800 over 2 years (I'm quite open to cashback shenanigans to make this happen). Unfortunately CPW/mobilephonesdirect aren't offering any Xiaomi, Oppos or OnePluses, and the Pixel 3a XL just isn't bonkers enough for me when for £3/month more I can get the Honor 20 Pro with 46 cameras, 256 jiggerbytes of flash and 8 jiggerbytes of rams.
I'm not too worried about losing the Play store - the new Huawei's without the google stuff are already being unofficially updated with access. If the worst happens and access is completely barred I can survive. Probably. -

Registered 18 years agoWait for the Pixel 4 I'd say. Especially if you want regular upgrades.
Also, look into the Moto One Zoom. Much cheaper but I doubt that you'll miss anything. -

Given how much the Pixel 3 XL debuted at, the Pixel 4 XL is going to be too rich for my blood. I suspect it'll join the £850+ SIM free club. My budget for two years of mobile access and a phone is less than that.

I'm honestly amazed people can justify contracts of £50+ a month to get the latest high end phones. -

Registered 4 years agoSo the Honor 20 Pro arrived today... It's pretty nice. It's weird going back to the natural-ish colour of LCD displays after years of retina-searing OLED colours, but I actually like it a lot. I'll definitely miss the always on display of OLED, though.
I fully expected the bloatware to be like Samsung-on-steroids, but tbh it's pretty unintrusive. The way Huawei have butchered the notifcation screen is awful - not being able to set the notification panels to a dark background is horrid. It's functional, though.
Having the fingerprint sensor on the side of the phone is the revelation here. Despite being much smaller in area than my previous phones sensor it's just as quick as LG's superb implementation without the clunkiness of turning the phone over or having it somewhere in screen. Being able to unlock easily without needing to see the phone or turn it over is awesome - why on earth isn't everyone doing it?
Also Huawei put screen protectors on their phones from new? What the hell - wy does no-one mention this? This is the kind of crazy shit that builds brand loyalty - knowing you won't lose 4 of your 5 pack of screen protectors to bits of fluff or feeling that you're in the Krypton Factor applying the damn thing is a nice feeling.
Summary: If you're looking for a mid-range phone and don't mind not having OLED or possible access to the Play store or having your nudes backed up by both the PRC communist party and the US NSA, it's alright. 7/10. -

Registered 15 years ago@nudistpete My Mate 20 Pro didn't have a screen protector with it. Probably avoiding the curved glass ones as they are a pain. I will be trying to avoid curved glass in the future myself though as it seems to have so many cons and no pros I care about. -

Registered 4 years agoYeah, I hate the curved trend. Last phone has a nice gouge in it because you can't buy a decent screen protector due to the curved edges. I bought some expensive protector that you had to spray on water and apply, not only was it awkward to apply but it was practically a bit of cling film cut to shape.... -

Registered 18 years agoI briefly got a mate 20 pro to replace my pixel 2 but I just didn't like it. Much fancier but the basics, I preferred the pixel. Holding out for pixel 4 release then may just grab a cheap 3XL .. just want wireless charging, better battery etc. Speed not an issue and I have moment lenses so effectively have a triple camera setup once I get a new case. Or I get an iPhone 11 pro or a note 10.. as I'm assuming if I didn't like the mate 20 the P30 won't be much better. Ah..so expensive..or I just keep the pixel 2 and go on holiday.. -

Looks nice, but don't think I'd buy a first generation bendy screen phone until they worked out the inevitable longevity issues.
