Indeed, if you have a modest size team working for a couple of years you can burn through millions of dollars pretty easily. Wages ain't cheap.

Bet Sega will be watching how well this does and quickly releasing Shenmue 1&2 on steam etc.

Alright. I guess I was hoping for fancier-sounding stretch goals than "French subtitles" and "Spanish subtitles".

Whilst I'm over the moon, I kind of wanted this on every platform going. Everyone should have access to it.

Was there any mention of the previous games being re-released as well? It's been a few years for a story continuation...

Yeah I really hope I can play it. I haven't upgraded my PC for a good few years now and I have an Xbox One as well.
  • Deleted user 16 June 2015 07:57:25
@disusedgenius A few years back, they hinted it during the release of the Dreamcast ports for PC, 360 and PS3. But, that was it. Judging by how well the KS is going, they'd be crazy not to re-release them now.

    @TSD

Sega are useless. Sorry, but that's how they've been recently.

Thank god others - LIKE US - have been pushing for this. Yes, the money suits at Sega should possibly/finally see some $$$, but I can't see them being that wise.

It's more likely they'll release a Shenmue-based endless runner starring Ryo.

    Could be fun, I guess.

    NO!

@Ryze Indeed they are. Every now and then they'll produce something good (SASRT, A Isolation, VC), but that's about it.

I see they've kept the voice acting authentically shit.

I have mixed feelings about this. I've said previously on Eurogamer that Shenmur 3 is the only game I would consider funding on kickstarter and I've wanted this announcement for years. Fantastic news!

However, that it is only for PC and PS4 and was announced at the Sony conference is one of the most cynical moves ever. I have a PS4 so makes no difference to me, but the principle of funding console exclusive titles via crowd funding is quite honestly abhorrent to me.

If it's an exclusive there is already the investment in the table. The general public shouldn't be funding something to allow corporate willy waving by any company. Even if they announced it at the Sony conference, but it was multi-plat like the way The Division had a trailer at the X1 conference, fair enough, but a bona-fide exclusive should not be funded by the public.

Regardless, this is a definite purchase for me, but I can't in good faith support the kickstarter in this case. Looks like I won't have to anyway I guess. Records will fall.

I am sure most people don't care about the KS stuff. It does smell a bit, aye.

I think you guys are looking at the Kickstarter thing all wrong.

It's a thermometer, a way to gauge how hot for this game the community is. The fact it's nearly at $2m before the first day is up shows that people WANT this. Although the internet has cried out for Shenmue 3 for years, SEGA have had no emphasis to cater to that demand as historic cost vs sales figures didn't match up and it would of been unprofitable for the company to do as such.

Yu Suzuki and his team would have bartered for the license for this from SEGA, on the proviso that they will continue to fund provided there is a big enough market for it. They would have approached Sony, offering them console exclusivity (timed or otherwise) and in exchange would share the E3 platform with them and use it as a way to launch their campaign. What better place to do so after all than the place where all eyes in the industry, fans and professionals alike, are watching?

Yu Suzuki's team gets their funding, SEGA are happy with the already sold/projected sales, Sony is happy because they get part of the sales as it's on their console, and we get to buy it EARLY, and CHEAPER than a full digital release. It's what, $29? That's about 18 for the full digital copy? That's pretty much a win-win for all parties.

@Pierre2k You've asked a good question ("why would a crowdfunded game be an exclusive?") but come to a bit of a cynical conclusion if you ask me. I think it's far more likely that Sony are doing some funding of their own. Why would Sega limit their potential audience for no reason whatsoever?

I'm 100% sure what you describe above is what happened. You've reached the same conclusion as me, except I find the whole thing more cynical. If Sony are providing their own funding then let them, but don't expect the public to cough up to support it.

Don't get me wrong though, still happy to see Shenmue 3 happen. Announcement of the show for me.

There usually is with Kickstarters, that's why they seem so cheap compared to regular development.

This, and this is what I love about my gaming life.

Despite having this sat here for the past 6 years...

I never got a Dreamcast in 1999 (PC) to 2001 (PS2), and I've NEVER loaded up a copy of Shenmue.

NEVER watched a Let's Play beyond 5 mins (due to the English dialogue), so I've got it all to experience. In Japanese with subtitles.

Thanks, Yu Suzuki. Reallllly. This guy needs a hug from me, and every penny that I've spent, that's gone in this guy's pocket has been well spent.

    /gushes

I'm gonna play that marathon at some point in the next 12-15 months, depending on what happens.

In the meantime, I need to play Ferarri F355 Challenge, and the others that I've missed.

    Good times. Gaming is back.
