The 9-11 museum is sobering and worth a visit. One of those places that felt wrong to me to take photos in but didn't stop most people, just not for me.

I ended up getting a bit agitated by people doing stupid posing for photographs around there. Seemed really out of kilter with the feeling of the place.

What's the main museum? Is it the met? One if the big ones has a planetarium that is pretty awesome. Massive screen on the ceiling, everyone sits in chairs angled back and they project the sky up on it, with a documentary about dark matter etc, was super interesting and watching it projected up on there was amazing. Felt like I was falling through space!
The American Museum of Natural History.
Yeah the planetarium is great, Harrison Ford doing the narration on the show I recall.

That's the one! Great museum too, although the csfe is shit. Go to the burger place on Columbus just outside instead.

Also Otto's Pizzeria in Washington Square is ace.

Ugh, we went last year and as I was waiting for the Mrs to pick up the tickets, just sat down taking it all in, spotted a girl taking tens on fucking selfies with one of the fountains with varying degree's of faces. Fuck humanity sometimes.

A few years back we went to the Comic Diner on the corner of 8th Av and 52nd St.

It's 24 hours which was great as we landed late so it was 11pm by the time we went looking for food. I enjoyed their Pizza Burger so much I STILL have the business card the owner gave me while we had a chat, but the real reason I remember the visit as we were talking to the owner and I noticed a signed photo by the till where we were stood...

    Ainsley Harriot.

Apparently he had been in a couple of months earlier and made out like he was some big deal. Gave them the signed photo without prompting :D

Otto's pizzeria in Washington Square is ace.

Pretty much any breakfast diner is great.

    Food stalls are delicious also.

Last time I was there, some friends that live locally took us to this place.
    http://www.rosamexicano.com/newyorkcity/

Good cocktails (Pomegranate margaritas) and for starters we got some nachos with guacamole. They bring a little cart over to your table and make it right there for you. Was pretty good.

This was 7 or 8 years ago though, so things may have changed.

I you go up to Harlem stop by Lolo's Seafood Shack, get some lunchboxes and eat them in Morningside Park. So good.

I would also recommend going to the Brooklyn brewery in Williamsburg, getting the East River Ferry down to DUMBO because it's ridiculously fast, getting pizza at Juliana's or Grimaldi's, then have a nice night walk over the Brooklyn Bridge.

Citymapper's a great app for getting around and public transport is pretty shit hot.

Coney Island is also a fun day out if you want to feel like you're in GTA 4.

    This is great: www.earinn.com

Went about three months ago. The resident blues band was playing, with different musicians turning up throughout the evening to take a turn. Didn't eat, just stood at the bar so can't speak for the food. Loads of people eating though, so was probably pretty good.

My wife and I were recommended the same restaurant by two random couples we stopped in the street. They all looked and sounded kind of embarrassed by the suggestion but they all finished with "It's where we always go".

It turned out to be a mix between some comfort neighborhood dive and college bar called Dojo. It wasn't overly expensive and the servings were generous.

Then my wives friend took us to an Ethiopian restaurant that was amazing but that I can't remember the name of. But do take this oportunity to try something that might not be available where you live (if you live in London you can disregard this advice)

I also have found memories of a hot tamale I bought on the street at a fleamarket in Hell's Kitchen, the slices at 2 Bros. Pizza and a sanwich I bought at a random deli.

Don't over think it. The setting makes it.

Oh, and get the subway to the Brooklyn end of the Brooklyn Bridge - there's an awesome ice cream place there. Cash only, but grab some ice cream, throw some hot chocolate sauce on, some nuts, baby, you got an ice cream sundae going.

Then eat it whilst walking along the Brooklyn Bridge going back into Manhattan.

Also do the Skyline, that's ace. Wasn't completed when I was staying there but was still good.

Oh, and Barcade in Brooklyn is great if you're a fan of drinking whilst playing arcade machines.

@Tonka Thanks, I'm in Glasgow so have quite a good choice of restaurants. I guess what I should of asked is where not to eat and drink.
Never had Ethiopian food before but I love to try new stuff so will have a hunt for it, do you know roughly which area were you in?

    Went there a few months ago, only in Manhattan so not sure about surrounding areas, but would recommend;

Halal guys - chicken and rice with addictive white sauce to have after a few drinks, similar to a kebab here but better
Upstate - really good oyster and craft beer place
Katz Deli - famous for that Meg Ryan scene in When Harry Met Sally but also does really good pastrami sandwiches
Don Antonio by Starita did really good pizzas
The Belfry was a nice small bar that does Picklebacks, shot of whiskey with a shot of pickle juice. Everyone was having them when I was there
