Maybe they just mean it's a 3D handheld in the same way the N64 did 3D and the SNES didn't.

Seems odd for Nintendo to show their hand so early and with such a terse statement. Don't they only tend to do this if they're anticipating a competitor announcement that they wish to spoil?

Yup, seems to be head tracking.

All of a sudden I envision a new 3D tech for everybody's tv. Just place a webcam on the top of your screen and equip your pc/console with proper head tracking software so that you track point of view changes in almost real-time. Here's your 3D tech right there....

(I sort of remember a tech demo for the wii, from a long time ago?)

Maybe they mean that the actual hardware is 3D. Like, it's a cube or something that you rotate.

That effect is impressive but I can't imagine it having much use in most games.

The 3DS had better be a completely new machine and not just yet another flavour of the same old shit. Some of the rumours leaking over the last few weeks had been moderately interesting, it'd be a shame if they all turned out to be horseshit.
