So I'm thoroughly enjoying playing Superstar Saga again, but Bowser's Minions is a steaming turd. In my head I thought that it was the sequel, which I now realise was Bowser's Inside Story.

Luckily SS alone is so good.

I think at some point you had to link your 3DS log-in with your network ID. I seem to remember doing such a thing, but its all very Nintendo so confusing and obfuscated. Maybe when the stars were withdrawn and the whole Miitomo stuff happened?

Yeah i sorted it in the end.

But returning to Nintendo, i kind of feels like they don't want my money at times.

Christmas is coming, and the little Pedants are due some new games for their 2DSs. They are girls, 8 and 6, and huge fans of Fantasy Life, Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon A New Beginning, and Mario Kart 7. Any recommendations for this demographic? They love Pokemon on TV but have never played any Pokemon games.

Also thinking about upgrading their slab 2DSs to the new 2DS XL version, worth doing?

I'd go try one out in GAME or something but having had both and the N3DS and N3DSXL, the 2DSXL is by far my favourite iteration of the device.

The larger screens are much better, and the clamshell keeps them protected, and its still lightweight compared to the N3DSXL

I thought the consensus on the N2DSXL was that's its a flappy plasticcy piece of crap? I'm still rocking my original 3DS, and never felt the need to go New, so I'd tend to stick with the old and known if I were you, assuming they've not managed to break them too much yet.

In terms of demographic, those games combined with MK7 sound like pretty broad tastes to me. I'd recommend almost anyone with a 3DS compatible thing plays through play the Zelda game (Link between Worlds IIRC) - it's thoroughly charming if a little easy I found.

    @mal

I didn't think that was the case, the reviews i saw were pretty good.

I prefer the lighter weight and slightly smaller frame than the N3DSXL for sure.

Yeah, I wasn't talking reviews so much, more the opinion in this thread, but maybe I'm misremembering. As you say, a trip down retail may be in order for DutyPedant to try things out.

Thanks chaps, will go take a look. Best recommendation for a Pokemon game, as somewhat overwhelmed by the range?

Last year's Pokémon Sun and Moon. A good starter Pokémon game, I found it too easy but great for kids. The old games were more challenging.

Nope, I love mine. Plus It's lighter the the old 3dsxl too so doesn't make your arms ache when playing it in bed! :)

Would you recommend getting both, i.e. one each, I'm not really familiar with how they differ.

    @DutyPedant

They are exactly the same game, with a few different pokemon only available to each version (e.g. one game has 150 pokemon, of which 10 are only in moon, and the other has the same 140 + 10 only available in sun)

You can then trade with people who own the other game to get the ones you are missing, and some pokemon only evolve if you trade them etc.

Although with the advent of the world trade thing, you dont need to know anyone with the game as much anymore

hmmm cant believe i wrote the above and i'm 37 this year:-(

@DutyPedant as mentined above Story of Seasons or its sequel. Not sure if any Rune Factory games got a physical release. Tomodachi Life may appeal to them but look it up first. If you're trying to expand a little there is Ever Oasis which I gather is part RPG and part town builder and not too challenging. There is also Monster Hunter Stories if they like Level 5 stuff like Fantasy Life. Not played either myself though but may be worth a look.

If you are going to upgrade their consoles to a 2DS XL you NEED to be finding this one :

That looks great, they'd love that! Pre-ordering now...

The thing I'm still getting confused by (and have been caught out before with games they've already got) is when they need one cartridge each. Some games let them have a save on each system, others either limit functions on the 2nd system (Animal Crossing) or dont allow a 2nd save at all (Nintendogs). Looks like I definitely need two Pokemons though.

@One_Vurfed_Gwrx Monster Hunter and Tomodachi also good calls, thanks!

They are always in short supply, and Nintendo is stingy with digital sales, so even if someone is selling used they ramp up the price.

I got a few Professor Layton DS games some months ago and way paying 10 pounds+ for every one of them.
  • Deleted user 2 January 2018 10:40:22
Certain games don't drop that much in price. Particularly for brand new. Your best bet is eBay, cex and shpock. The latter I recently bought fire emblem awakening and fantasy life for Ł18 and Ł14 which is near enough Ł20 saving judging by how much they go for elsewhere.

I'm mainly concentrating on the 3DS this year. Well 2DS XL as my wife bought me one. I already had quite a few decent games digital but this year I want to play through the following:

    Fire emblem echoes (playing)
Fire emblem fates (own all 3 stories)digital
    Fire emblem Awakening
    Ever Oasis
    Metroid Samus Returns
    Kid Icarus uprising
    Star fox 3D
Advance Wars Dual Strike & Dark Ruin (NDS games)
    New Super Mario Bros 2
    Steamworld heist
    Super Mario 3D land
    Paper Mario
    Megaman legacy collection

Various others that put it over 20 games. Now I very much doubt I'll play all the above to completion and I realise it's very strategy game orientated but those are my preferred games for portable. Plenty to go at anyway.

I plan/hope to do similar - have become such a trophy whore on the PS4 that I didn't complete a single 3DS game last year, and even getting a Switch and Zelda on release I've decided to actually play that properly rather than the mere 15 hours or so I put in. Got so many great 3DS games that I still need to play.

I've been hugely impressed with the 2DS XL I got for Xmas. I had an original 3DS a few years ago, and this seems a big upgrade. Almost through OoT and weighing up whether to pick up the new Metroid.

Yeah the wife bought me one in-between Xmas and new year. I'm really impressed with it. I've owned every iteration of them now apart from the standard 2ds. I thought it would be a massive comedown from the switch and it's lovely display but it's really not bothered me. Gameplay is king as they say. I'm starting Samus Returns after I'm done with Zelda.

    Stupid question, I now own 3 3DS models (N3DS, N3DSXL and N2DSXL - dont ask).

I only really play with the latter one now and then. Whats the best thing to do battery wise with the other two, should i leave them on charge in docks, or should i just charge them up and let them be?
